When rising high school senior María O. came to Philadelphia from Tampico, Mexico, she was looking to explore career paths in the fashion business. What she learned was a crash course in real-world venture creation! "Standing up to speak in front of people you've never seen before was nerve-wracking, but as the days went on, we became this tiny little family. For our project, my team and I created a sustainable, affordable and inclusive jewelry brand called Helumana... We created prices based on how much we spent on labor and materials while still gaining enough revenue. This project felt very realistic, including prices, yearly gains and an ask to the sharks at the end." - María O. Working alongside her teammates, María helped design, cost and pitch Helumana, a sustainable, affordable jewelry line complete with material research, labor cost breakdowns and revenue projections for a live shark-tank style pitch. 🦈 Our pre-college programs empower young minds to step outside their comfort zones, master collaborative teamwork and build real confidence before making their college decisions. Black Bottom Voices at the Semiquincentennial is a free, hybrid event on October 16th, involving students and community stakeholders on Drexel and Penn campuses, connected by a video link. Both universities stand in the Black Bottom. The event features Walter Palmer, JD, leading conversations with Black Bottom elders, who will share memories and evaluate 3D digital models of the Market Street corridor circa 1950, displayed on a 10’×20′ LED wall on the Drexel campus. Dr. Edward Epstein, speaking with the live audience in Stiteler Hall Auditorium will situate the Black Bottom’s destruction within a national pattern of mid-20th century urban renewal programs that targeted minority communities across the country. Through the video link, participants in Stiteler Hall will see the 3D models and interact with the Black Bottom elders. Link in bio to rsvp! Join Design Philadelphia & the Fashion Community this Friday… Philadelphia-based fashion designers and Drexel alumni Varvara “Bobby” Diakonenkova and Elias Frost debut their newest collection, “Dear Philly,” a collection by the Art Collective Most Hated, as part of @designphilly 2026 Festival. An ode to the city where they studied fashion design and developed their creative practices, “Dear Philly” brings together Bobby’s Russian-born perspective and their shared experience of Philadelphia through sculptural silhouettes, architectural lines, and personal expression. Bobby competed on Project Runway Season 22, and Elias will compete in the Supima Design Competition this November.
