Supporting health and healing, every step of the way 🤍

Our dietitians, Kahlia and Jen, provide personalised nutrition care to support our patients’ journeys - whether that involves weight management, body contouring or general health and wellbeing.

From dietary intake and everyday eating habits to reviewing micronutrient blood results and providing evidence-based guidance on vitamins and supplements, their advice is tailored to each patient’s needs.

Our InBody 970S body composition scans also help inform this care and track changes over time.

Working alongside our surgical and clinical team, they help patients optimise their health, prepare for surgery, navigate recovery and care for their long-term health.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

In Australia, all dietitians are nutritionists - but not all nutritionists are dietitians.

The title “nutritionist” is not legally protected, which means anyone can call themselves a nutritionist without having any qualification. A dietitian has completed an accredited university qualification and is trained to provide evidence-based nutrition care, including medical nutrition therapy.

Our Accredited Practising Dietitians at Morphē support people across bariatric and metabolic health, medical weight-management treatments, surgical preparation and recovery, lipoedema care, and long-term wellbeing.

Appointments may include a review of your health and nutrition history, dietary intake, pathology results, protein and micronutrient requirements, body composition, and individual goals.

The focus is not on dieting or a one-size-fits-all plan. It is practical, personalised care designed to support your health and nutrition over the long term. 🤍

Happy Father’s Day to our wonderful Morphē dads 🤍

They may be surrounded—and slightly outnumbered—by women at Morphē, but they are wonderful examples of loving and devoted dads.

Wishing a very special day to all the fathers and father figures in our Morphē community. We also recognise that today can carry many different emotions, and we’re sending warmth to anyone finding Father’s Day difficult.

Gastric bypass isn’t one operation. It’s two — and the difference matters.

Most people come to clinic having heard “bypass” as a single thing. In Australia we commonly perform two versions, and choosing between them is a clinical decision, not a preference.

ROUX-EN-Y GASTRIC BYPASS
The stomach is divided to create a small pouch, and the small bowel is rerouted and joined in two places. It has the longest follow-up data of any bariatric operation, and it’s generally the preferred option when significant reflux is part of the picture — it diverts acid away from the oesophagus rather than worsening it.

ONE ANASTOMOSIS GASTRIC BYPASS
A longer, narrower gastric tube joined to a single loop of small bowel. One join instead of two, technically simpler, more weight loss on average, less internal hernias, less time under anaesthetic. The trade-off is a higher risk of bile reflux, so selection matters.

Both work the same two ways: they limit how much you can comfortably eat, and they change the gut hormone signalling that drives hunger and fullness. That hormonal effect is why blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes often improves before much weight has been lost at all.

What I tell every patient:
– Neither operation is a shortcut. Lifelong vitamin supplementation, annual blood tests and ongoing dietitian input are part of the deal.
– Risks are real — leak, internal hernia, marginal ulcer, nutritional deficiency, and sometimes further surgery.
– Results vary between individuals. Nobody can promise you a number.
– Bypass is not automatically “better” than a sleeve. Reflux, diabetes, previous surgery, medications and your own goals all shape the decision.

If you’re weighing this up, start with a discussion with your GP. A referral means we can assess you properly and talk through whether surgery, medical management, or a combination is right for you.

General information only — not personal medical advice. All surgery carries risk.

$“You’re just overweight.” If you’ve been told that and it hasn’t worked, it might be because it was not the right advice. Lipoedema causes disproportionate, often painful swelling in the legs and arms — and it’s still frequently mistaken for obesity. That means women spend years dieting and exercising against a condition that simply doesn’t respond to either, because lipoedema fat behaves differently to ordinary excess weight. In this video, surgeons from @morpheclinic @dralexcameronfracs and @drgeorgebalalis talk about how often they see this pattern — patients who’ve been carrying a misdiagnosis for years before anyone recognises lipoedema for what it is. Once it’s correctly identified, there’s an actual treatment pathway, with both non-invasive and invasive options depending on the individual. If “lose weight” has never worked for you the way it’s supposed to, it’s worth getting properly assessed rather than trying harder at the wrong thing. Dr Sharon Robertson recently presented at the ANZMOSS Annual Conference in Tasmania on two important regulatory processes that may contribute to eating-related difficulties within the bariatric population: interoceptive regulation and impulse-control difficulties.

Her presentation highlighted the importance of looking beyond standardised psychological testing to better understand each patient’s individual needs and behavioural readiness for surgery.

By strengthening pre-operative assessment and support, we hope to better prepare our patients for surgery and improve their longer-term outcomes.

Thank you, Dr Robertson, for your ongoing passion and commitment to improving care and support for bariatric patients .🤍

Sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass—which procedure may be more appropriate for you?

Both are established surgical treatment options for obesity and weight-related health conditions, but they work differently. Each procedure has its own potential benefits, risks and considerations.

The most appropriate option depends on several factors, including your medical history, eating patterns, reflux symptoms, previous treatments and individual health needs.

Follow along as Dr George Balalis explains sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass in our upcoming Reels.

Both Dr George Balalis and Dr Jesse Beumer offer bariatric surgery at Morphē.

A GP referral is required to arrange a consultation.

$A shared interest in advancing the surgical treatment of lipoedema. While recently in Cyprus, I had the opportunity to spend time with plastic surgeon Dr Iakovos Georgiou @driakovosgeorgiou who has extensive experience in lipoedema surgery. We discussed our approaches to staging, surgical planning, and the management of this complex condition, including patient selection, lymphatic-preserving techniques, and the importance of structured recovery pathways. Although we work within different healthcare systems, we share a strong sense of optimism about the progress being made in this field, and the growing ability to offer more tailored, effective care for patients living with lipoedema. Conservative management remains the foundation of care and may include compression therapy, lymphatic therapy, physiotherapy, exercise, pain management, and metabolic support. For many patients, these measures provide meaningful benefit and remain an essential part of long-term management. For appropriately selected patients, lymph-sparing liposuction may be considered to reduce symptoms and improve function. This is major surgery, with inherent risks and a significant recovery period, and careful patient selection and counselling remain central to achieving good outcomes. At Morphē, lipoedema care is delivered through a multidisciplinary pathway. When surgery is indicated, Dr Alex Cameron @dralexcameronfracs and I operate together, coordinating care across the entire perioperative journey to support patients at every stage. Why does lipoedema surgery at Morphē involve two surgeons?
Dr George Balalis, a specialist obesity surgeon, and I operate together, each with a liposuction setup — allowing greater volume removal in a safe timeframe.

We use a “lymphatic-sparing” technique: tumescent-based, power-assisted liposuction with a variety of cannulas, chosen to minimise damage to the lymphatic system while still clearing the abnormal lipoedema fat effectively.

An important distinction: weight does not cause lipoedema. It’s a distinct condition of abnormal fat distribution — but many women living with lipoedema do also carry additional weight alongside it. That’s where George’s expertise continues before and, more importantly, after surgery. Long-term weight stability is associated with a lower risk of recurrence or progression.

Surgery is one step in Lipoedema management - the plan around it is what makes it durable.

All surgery carries risks and requires a consultation to determine suitability.
