A shared interest in advancing the surgical treatment of lipoedema.
While recently in Cyprus, I had the opportunity to spend time with plastic surgeon Dr Iakovos Georgiou @driakovosgeorgiou who has extensive experience in lipoedema surgery.
We discussed our approaches to staging, surgical planning, and the management of this complex condition, including patient selection, lymphatic-preserving techniques, and the importance of structured recovery pathways.
Although we work within different healthcare systems, we share a strong sense of optimism about the progress being made in this field, and the growing ability to offer more tailored, effective care for patients living with lipoedema.
Conservative management remains the foundation of care and may include compression therapy, lymphatic therapy, physiotherapy, exercise, pain management, and metabolic support. For many patients, these measures provide meaningful benefit and remain an essential part of long-term management.
For appropriately selected patients, lymph-sparing liposuction may be considered to reduce symptoms and improve function. This is major surgery, with inherent risks and a significant recovery period, and careful patient selection and counselling remain central to achieving good outcomes.
At Morphē, lipoedema care is delivered through a multidisciplinary pathway. When surgery is indicated, Dr Alex Cameron @dralexcameronfracs and I operate together, coordinating care across the entire perioperative journey to support patients at every stage.
