Had the honour to speak at Tales Of The Cocktail 2026, and what an experience it was! Who would've thought that tinkering with random Penang flavours in a dodgy little bar behind a clothing store in George Town 10 years ago would one day bring me to New Orleans to speak about the Southeast Asian cocktail scene?

Much love to @annasulan for this massive opportunity for me to spread my nutmeg gospel halfway across the world, and to @drinksconnexion and @brownforman for making this trip come true.

A huge thank you to @darkkfreckles and @lieblingcynthia for being such amazing hosts and ensuring the seminar went as smooth as butter, and also to everyone who showed up and showed love.

Let me show you what it’s like to bartend on the road. This time I’m in Malaysia with the team at Back Door Bodega, trying several noodle dishes and one of the world’s stinkiest fruits.

Let me break it down here:

Asam Laksa — a dense, vinegary, fish-based noodle soup. Rich and a bit pungent, but delicious if you’re into seafood.

Hokkien Mee — my favorite of all the noodle dishes I had. Crispy pork, red chili broth, and delicious noodles made this a hit. Even if it’s hot out.

Durian — the world’s stinkiest fruit. Like a banana and an onion had a baby. Weird and sticky, but with a creamy, rich texture. You either love it or hate it. Wash it down with salt water and you’re good to go.

Char Kway Teow — Malaysia’s answer to pad thai? Maybe. I think it’s better. Much more well seasoned and bursting with flavor.

Malaysia is packed with flavor — and hey, I gotta stay well fed if I’m making your drinks behind the bar.

We wrap up our @penangcocktailweek shenanigans with one of Asia's most decorated bartenders — Ming (@ming_f25), who brings his new brainchild, A Bar Has No Name (@abarhasnoname.sh) to Penang, as he takes over the bar at Backdoor Bodega tonight.

A man that needs little introduction in the bartending world, Ming is an award-winning veteran with multiple accolades under his belt, including World Class Bartender of the Year China, Cointreau Margarita Challenge Global Champion, and DRiNK Awards Bartender of the Year, as well as leading the bar programme as General Manager of Guangzhou's Hope & Sesame in his previous role.
