A Week of Cocktails in Penang 🍸

Penang Cocktail Week brought together bars, bartenders and cocktail lovers through a series of events across the city—from guest shifts and special menus to food, music and plenty of drinks to discover along the way.

These were some of the moments from my experience throughout the week, including cocktails and small bites, bar hopping, and the Cocktail Garden finale at Hin Bus Depot.

The finale felt almost like a festival. Cocktails were being prepared throughout the evening, while food stalls kept everyone fed between drinks.

BYD, the title partner of Penang Cocktail Week, showcased the Sealion 7 at the event. Elsewhere at the garden, one of the participating liquor brands brought along an F1 simulator—probably the only car any of us should be driving after a few cocktails.

There was also a Durex display featuring its new 001 series, certainly one of the more unexpected things we came across that evening.

The music moved from an easy-going two-piece performance to Bunga Raya—one of my favourite local bands—as well as by Dato Maw, Coollen and Light Low, and DJ Jenni F and Y!N keeping the celebration going into the night.

A lively conclusion to a week celebrating Penang’s growing cocktail scene.

Did you attend any of the events during Penang Cocktail Week? Which bar, cocktail or moment stood out to you?

Let me show you what it’s like to bartend on the road. This time I’m in Malaysia with the team at Back Door Bodega, trying several noodle dishes and one of the world’s stinkiest fruits.

Let me break it down here:

Asam Laksa — a dense, vinegary, fish-based noodle soup. Rich and a bit pungent, but delicious if you’re into seafood.

Hokkien Mee — my favorite of all the noodle dishes I had. Crispy pork, red chili broth, and delicious noodles made this a hit. Even if it’s hot out.

Durian — the world’s stinkiest fruit. Like a banana and an onion had a baby. Weird and sticky, but with a creamy, rich texture. You either love it or hate it. Wash it down with salt water and you’re good to go.

Char Kway Teow — Malaysia’s answer to pad thai? Maybe. I think it’s better. Much more well seasoned and bursting with flavor.

Malaysia is packed with flavor — and hey, I gotta stay well fed if I’m making your drinks behind the bar.

Cheers.
