AMG invited me to their Private Lounge in Affalterbach, Germany last month.

One of 20 people selected globally.

This is what was waiting for us.

The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed. First of the Mythos series.

250 units. No roof. No windscreen. F1 HALO system. $1 million.

AMG doesn’t do anything small.

Now they’re calling again — LA. May 19th. World Premiere.

I came home from Tokyo wanting less.

Every salary bump tempted another lifestyle upgrade.

I kept my living expenses flat and automated every extra dollar into Vanguard index funds.

After 13 years at Google, the investments outgrew my annual expenses and let me walk away at 37.

In 1991, Mercedes handed Porsche the keys to something insane. They built the 500E by hand at the Zuffenhausen factory, one by one, on the same floor where 911s were made. Then AMG dropped a 6.0L M119 V8 into it and called it the E60. Wolf in sheep’s clothing doesn’t even cover it.

Fast forward to today, standing inside J-Auto in Tokyo. Matsumoto-san’s shop is wall-to-wall with them, stacked with rare parts and engines. The place is a holy grail for W124 collectors worldwide.

Most people walk past a W124 and see an old sedan. If you know, you know.

A few weeks ago, I lost my AMG GTS after a collision on the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Today, a package arrived from Affalterbach. The team at Mercedes-AMG Private Lounge had framed the photo that won their contest in a custom print.

Cars come and go, but the memories, road trips, and community behind them stay forever.
