Hey, I’m Dr. Khaki – and I wear a few hats.

I’m a general surgeon who splits time between the trauma bay, the OR, and ringside at combat sports events. My work includes:

• Trauma surgery – High-stakes, fast-paced, taking care of patients in their greatest time of need.

• Robotic surgery – Using cutting-edge minimally invasive tech to help people heal faster with less downtime.

• Ringside medicine – Taking care of fighters and making sure they stay safe in the ring.

Every day looks a little different—and that’s what I love about it.

Pro MMA fighter 👊. Savage on the mats 🦍. Taking excellent care of patients as an OR nurse 🏥.

Caught him a couple times on the mat, BUT I’ve definitely been on the receiving end 💯.

Thanks for the shout out, I’ll take that compliment. 🥋#bjj #doctorswhotrain #bjjculture taken in Catalyst Jiu-Jitsu by @drkhaki.md

🫁Understanding Severe Pneumonia: A Deep Dive
📌 When pneumonia overwhelms the lungs and the body’s defenses
🚨 Ben Askren was rushed to the ICU this week with severe staph infection and pneumonia
⸻

🩻 What is SEVERE PNEUMONIA?
It’s not “just a bad cold.” It’s a full-on war in the lungs. Pneumonia happens when germs (like bacteria including Staph aureus/MRSA or viruses) flood your air sacs (alveoli), turning them into a swamp of fluid, pus, and dead cells.
💥 Oxygen can’t get through.

⸻

🏥 What Makes It Severe?
• 🤒 High fever
• 🫁 Oxygen levels crash
• 😷 Confusion, fast breathing, heart racing
• 🩻 Chest imaging shows lung collapse or “white-out” from fluid
• 🥵 Some cases spiral into sepsis or ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome)

⸻

💉 Treatment = All-Out Medical Assault
• IV antibiotics targeting deadly bugs like Staph aureus and its resistant form MRSA 🦠
• Oxygen supplementation
• Fluids, fever control, and careful monitoring
• In extreme cases: life support (intubation/ ventilator, pressors, etc.)

⸻

📊 Why Should Athletes and Everyone Else Care?
• Intense training can suppress your immune system
• 🦠 Staph infections (common on mats!) can evolve into deadly lung infections if bacteria enters the bloodstream 🩸
• You don’t have to be “old or unhealthy” to get wrecked by pneumonia
• 🚑 A delay in treatment = rapid progression of the infection

⸻

🛡️ Protect Yourself
• Clean mats + shower after training to decrease risk of skin infections like Staph
• Watch for warning signs: high fever, chest pain, trouble breathing
• Don’t train sick. Don’t ignore symptoms. Fighters aren’t invincible.
• Consider vaccines (pneumococcal, flu) especially if you are high risk or have underlying lung disease. It is possible to have influenza pneumonia and then develop a super-infection with staph on top of that. Do your research and talk to your medical provider.

⸻

Hoping Ben Askren pulls through this battle. #askrenstrong 🙏

Mat herpes isn’t a joke — and it can take you out of the FIGHT.
Herpes gladiatorum is a skin infection caused by HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus) and it hits hardest in combat sports like MMA, wrestling, and BJJ. You’ll usually see it as clusters of painful blisters on the face, neck, or torso — but it can show up anywhere.

The catch?
It’s highly contagious — even before the blisters show — and it spreads through skin-to-skin contact and shared gear.

What to watch for:
	•	Tingling, burning, or itchy skin
	•	Fever, swollen lymph nodes
	•	Blisters or sores that pop up and crust over

Protect yourself and your team:
	•	Don’t train with active skin lesions
	•	Keep mats and gear clean
	•	No sharing towels, gloves, or razors
	•	If something looks sketchy on your skin, get checked ASAP

According to the Association of Ringside Physicians’ skin infection guidelines, athletes with herpes gladiatorum must be withheld from contact until resolution of systemic symptoms, lesions are fully crusted, dry, no new lesions for 72 hours, and antiviral therapy has been ongoing for at least 6-10 days.

Once you’ve got the virus, it’s in your system for life — and outbreaks can come back under stress or fatigue. If you have see a medical professional for treatment and suppression options.

Train smart. Stay sharp. Don’t let a virus beat you.

Like and follow for more!
