This October, moviegoers in more than 200 theaters across 22 states and Washington, D.C., will see a public service announcement on the big screen before their film begins, and in many theaters, in the lobby as well.

In it, seven-time Grand Slam champion and Olympian, Venus Williams, and renowned breast cancer surgeon, Dr. Kristi Funk, describe steps women can take to lower their risk of breast cancer: eating a plant-based diet, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight.

The video is part of Let’s Beat Breast Cancer, our annual campaign to bring risk reduction information to women who may not be hearing it elsewhere.

Select theaters across the country are also screening another project that raises important conversations about breast cancer.

Hello Beautiful, an award-winning film, is based on the memoir of breast cancer survivor Christine Handy. Handy, a former model who serves as the film’s executive producer, has spent nearly a decade working to change how breast cancer is portrayed in film. Rather than tragedy, the story focuses on survivorship and life after diagnosis.

The film has also been screened in hospitals and other healthcare settings for patients, caregivers, and care teams.

In several cities, including Charlotte, Charleston, Los Angeles, and the Twin Cities, audiences can see both the film and PSA.

To find Hello Beautiful screening locations, dates, and times, we encourage you to visit their channels.

Bringing the PSA to theaters was made possible by supporters who gave at our International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine, by viewers who donated during our recent Let’s Beat Breast Cancer Give-A-Thon, and by individual sponsors. The Give-A-Thon aired live in September and brought together Dr. Funk, Dr. Neal Barnard, survivors, advocates, and guests including Alicia Silverstone, William H. Macy, and Marilu Henner.

We are grateful to everyone who contributed.

Venus Williams, a mostly plant-based athlete, has partnered with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) for a breast cancer awareness PSA.

The legendary tennis player appears alongside Dr Kristi Funk, a breast cancer surgeon and plant-based advocate, in a short video shared on PCRM’s YouTube.

According to a PCRM survey, just 19 percent of women said their healthcare provider had discussed the link between nutrition and breast cancer risk with them.

October is breast cancer awareness month, and Tuesday the 13th is breast cancer awareness day. The PSA is currently showing in AMC theaters across the US.

Right now on @talkfiftytome - @constancezimmer lets you in on her recent cancer diagnosis and shares the doctor who helped her make some complicated decisions.
@drkristifunk was the one doctor who made Constance feel like she had the power to make a decision that was right for her and not anyone else. She also happens to be one of the best surgeons in the country. A board-certified breast cancer surgeon, bestselling author, international keynote speaker, and women's health advocate, opened her private breast center ā€œThe Pink Lotusā€ three months before giving birth to triplet boys in 2009. She published the bestselling book: ā€œBreasts: The Owner's Manual,ā€ the year before turning 50 and became a whole-food, plant-based advocate with her own cookbook and seriesĀ  ā€œCancer-Kicking! Kitchenā€ that reframes breast cancer as something women can fight with their forks. She put her whole family on a plant-based diet because she decided the science required it, and launched her Cancer-Kicking! PowWow podcast. She also hosts the annual Cancer-Kicking Summit at Terranea Resort and leads the Pink Lotus Power Up community. Her 50s have been her most public, platform-building decade and now at 56 she shows no signs of slowing down.
We are beyond grateful she’s here in between surgeries to talk us through all things Breast cancer. by @drkristifunk
