Reflecting on a truly rewarding weekend at the Kerala State Orthopaedic Conference (KOACON 2026) in Calicut. With nearly 1,200 colleagues in attendance, the scale of the event was matched only by the quality of the scientific discourse.
It was a privilege to contribute from both sides,as part of the organizing team and as a participant in the scientific sessions through my academic talks and chairing duties. A landmark event that I’m proud to have been a part of❤️✨ by @drmammu

Honoured to have completed my Foot and Ankle and Lower Limb Surgery Fellowship under Prof. Markus Walther at Schön Klinik and FIFA Medical Centre, Munich, Germany.
The fellowship offered invaluable exposure. Early-morning discussions to a wide range of complex procedures, including total ankle replacements, deformity corrections, and ankle arthroscopy.

Grateful to Prof. Walther and the entire team for their mentorship, and to my co-fellows Dr. Su Yuen (Malaysia), Dr. Julieta Brue (Argentina), and Dr. Amr Khattab (Egypt) for making this journey truly memorable. taken in Munich, Germany by @drmammu

1️⃣ “What if they’re never the same after surgery?”

You’re not necessarily afraid of the surgery. You’re afraid your parent may never walk the way they do today—or may somehow end up worse. Even watching them struggle with pain now is difficult.

2️⃣ “Will the knee ever bend normally again?”

Someone may have told you that after knee replacement, the knee will never bend properly. You’ve heard that story, and now that fear keeps coming back every time surgery is discussed.

3️⃣ “Is surgery really necessary?”
You’ve discussed it many times. Every conversation ends with, “Let’s wait a little longer.” They can still manage somehow, so you keep postponing the decision.

4️⃣ “What happens after the surgery?”

Your biggest worry may not actually be the operation. It’s what comes afterwards. Who will stay with them? Who will take them for physiotherapy? How long will recovery take? With everyone's responsibilities, the surgery gets postponed again.

5️⃣ “What if we're being advised surgery unnecessarily?”

You may wonder, “Is this surgery really needed, or is it being recommended because it’s an easy option?” You may never say it aloud, but it’s completely normal to have that question.

6️⃣ “They keep saying, ‘I’m managing.’”
You don't want to force your parent into a surgery they're afraid of. So you keep waiting. Meanwhile, their pain slowly becomes part of their everyday life.

7️⃣ And finally… “What if the surgery makes things worse?”
This may be the biggest fear of all.

“What if they were managing before… and after surgery, things become more difficult?”
Sometimes, that single fear is enough to keep a family from making a decision.

If even one of these thoughts feels familiar, you're not alone.

Knee replacement is a big decision. Don't make it out of fear—and don't postpone it just because of fear.

Understand the condition. Ask questions. Discuss the benefits, risks and alternatives with your orthopaedic surgeon.

And then make the decision that's right for your parent by @drmammu
