This is why you should 100% get behind the junior doctor’s strike.

It was a privilege to spend the day with a group of doctors who have decided to stand up and say enough is enough.

We are being paid 26% less than someone in our position in 2008.

I hardly know a soul who isn’t considering leaving.

The NHS is in crisis.

Our health secretary didn’t even turn up to the last round of talks.

This government does not care about me and you.

Or our wonderful NHS.

We want to be valued for the work that we do.

We want fair pay.

Series 2 Episode 3. TheStraightTalkingDr Podcast.

Mark X @thekingofchemo

Iain is a fitness trainer and YouTuber who back in 2020 received a shock diagnosis of Stage 3 brain cancer after signing up to a medical trial.

Following this he decided to dedicate his life to raising money for cancer research and has since embarked on countless fitness challenges. I was blown away by Iain’s infectiously positive attitude to life and I am so grateful to him for sharing his incredible story.

Today we can finally announce something huge:

@younglivesvscancer - one of the UK’s leading children’s cancer charities, has made a strategic investment into Orli.

As an A&E doctor, this feels full circle.

I’ve spent years meeting families at some of the most frightening, overwhelming and uncertain moments of their lives.

Clinical care matters.
Currently, we forget the emotional burden that comes with it.

We know that helping children prepare for healthcare impacts outcomes.

Whether they feel safe.
Whether they understand what’s happening next.
Whether they have a way to express the things they can’t always put into words, or regulate the feelings that arise.

These things matter.

Orli is built to use play, creativity and characters to help children make sense of big feelings, and to empower the adults around them.

Young Lives vs Cancer have an Innovation Lab actively partnering with a small number of innovators who are building technology that can change how young people and families experience cancer care.

They are the perfect partner for us to expand into healthcare:

- Decades of experience supporting children, young people and families
- Frontline practitioners across the UK
- A community of young people with lived experience.

We’ve been touring the UK asking parents the same BIG question.

And by day 3, we started to hear the same BIG answer:

“What’s a wobbly moment from your childhood?”

The most common answer?

Something that happened at school.

An exam result.
The transition between schools.
Something another child said that stuck for thirty years.

The people answering are adults, describing feelings they’ve carried since they were seven. Their children are sitting right next to them, living their own version of it now.

It’s a pattern, and we’re excited to study it properly, with a load more families.

But if we want to help children through the wobbly moments, school looks like a good place to start.

Does this resonate with you?
Was your wobbliest moment at school?

I’d love to hear it. by @drmarkcox

The pressure to make summer holidays magical is real. But your kids won’t remember the perfect day out.

They’ll remember you, side by side, making something silly together.

Over the last week we’ve watched hundreds of families do exactly that across the UK.

This was from Glasgow - Day 3 of our mission to helping 1M children.

Consider this your sign to keep it simple and save it for a wobbly afternoon. by @drmarkcox

We are always inspired by the young creators that we meet.

Elliott is one of them.

He joined us in Belfast for our @natwest_business workshop.

He didn’t only share his experience of the workshop, he gave us the best feedback.

Our mission is to help children express themselves. To understand that all of our brains work differently.

And Elliotts’ message is one we share. That through creativity, we can harness our brains to live our best lives.

We can't wait for Elliott, and all of the other creators we meet on our tour, to help us design what comes next… by @drmarkcox

Screen time and big feelings over the summer?

Welcome to Day 2 of helping 1M children navigate life’s wobbly moments.

Today we’re in Belfast.
The first ever Summer Orliday with NatWest.

And the first time we’ve shared the Orliverse.
A ‘phygital’ experience, made by kids, for kids.

The kind of screen time that actually gives something back.

See you tomorrow for day 3! by @drmarkcox

Day one of helping one million children navigate life’s wobbly moments.

This little guy started it, made by a student in Sunderland over a year ago.

What we learnt is that when a child makes their own character, made by kids, for kids, something opens up. Their feelings get a face, and they start to show us what they can’t always say.

So we kept going. Children have now made two thousand Orlis.

Today, we’re launching the mission properly. A UK tour with Natwest. Six cities, six events, hundreds of families.

And every family will get first access to The Orliverse.

Belfast first. Follow along for day two. taken in London, United Kingdom by @drmarkcox

Big feelings don’t take the summer holidays off…

That’s why we’re taking Orli on tour!

This summer, we’re running FREE Summer Orlidays across the UK with @natwest_business where children aged 5-12 can create their own little friend for big feelings through creativity, play and imagination.

Led by clinicians and designed to help children understand and express their emotions in a way that feels safe, fun and memorable.

Find us at the NatWest Accelerator hubs in:

📍 Belfast
📍 Edinburgh
📍 Glasgow
📍 Manchester
📍 Cardiff
📍 London

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or family friend, we’d love to see you there.

Spaces are limited and they’re completely free.

Head to our website (you can find the link in our bio) to book a place before they’re gone!

See you there 💜💚! taken in London, United Kingdom by @drmarkcox

My first A&E shift in two months* was brutal.

And my 10th patient of the day reminded me why we’re building Orli.

30 degrees outside. Four-hour waits. One doctor off sick. Three nurses down. Five hospital-grade coffees deep.

Then I met a lady I’d noticed earlier in the waiting room.

Holding her head. Clearly in pain.

Doing everything she could to keep her two young children entertained.

We took a history and investigated:

No red flags. Nothing sinister.

But after a short conversation, it became clear what she was really carrying.

Single parent. Two children under ten. Work uncertain. Money uncertain.

The stress had built to the point where hospital felt like the only place left to go.

As she left, she thanked me.

Not for the medicine.

For the conversation.

That stuck with me.

She didn’t just need a doctor.

She needed to feel understood.

And so do her children, before life teaches them to carry those same feelings alone.

That’s what we’re building at Orli.

Not just for children but for the parents holding it all together too.

Connection earlier, way before the waiting room. 💚💜

*I’ve struggled to find time to work in A&E recently because Orli has completely taken over my life (in the best way).

Big announcement coming this week...* by @drmarkcox
