Year 4 at Owen Sound @choir_camp! ❤️

Thank you for another week filled with music. It’s incredible to watch this little organization continue to grow - bringing together like-minded music makers to spend a week singing, learning, laughing, and simply enjoying one another’s company. Full of joy. Full of songs. 🎶 taken in Owen Sound, Ontario by @drmarkramsay

Dr. Mark Ramsay is Coordinator of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor in Music Education at Western University’s Don Wright Faculty of Music. He teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and is the conductor of Western University Singers. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts (Choral Conducting) and a Master of Music (Choral Conducting) at University of Toronto under the tutelage of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, and a Bachelor of Music Education (Piano) from University of Prince Edward Island.
Mark is the Artistic Director and Conductor of Toronto’s award-winning Exultate Chamber Singers. In recent years, the ensemble has been invited to perform at Podium: Canada’s national choral conference and festival, recorded their sixth album At First Light at the Glenn Gould Studio, and was named first place winner in the adult mixed-voice chamber choir category in Choral Canada’s National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. Under his leadership, the organization has created programs to support both young conductors and composers, and has commissioned sixteen new works by Canadian composers. Mark is a strong advocate for music education and community music making. He is currently a board member of Sirens Choral Association and a former co-chair of Podium 2022. Mark also served on the board of Choirs Ontario and is a past editor of their publication Dynamic. He is frequently invited to appear as a guest conductor and clinician for choirs, community festivals, and conferences, and he has worked as an adjudicator at the local, provincial, and national levels including the National Finals of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals. Mark has worked as a high school music teacher, provincial curriculum specialist, church music leader, and community choir director. by @drmarkramsay

So incredibly proud of @exultatechambersingers for bringing ‘Home in the 6ix’ to an enthusiastic crowd yesterday afternoon as part of the @roythomsonhall Choir & Organ Series. We shared a thoughtfully curated program featuring Toronto composers across several generations—so much amazing music from our beloved city!

Huge congratulations to the dedicated, loving team of singers, @drmarkramsay (conductor), Mira Jung (pianist), Ryan McDonald (admin) and guest organist Stephen Boda. I love this choir, so so much! by @drmarkramsay

What a fantastic way to end the summer - over 100 singers singing their hearts out at the Nova Scotia Choral Federation’s annual Adult Choir Camp. Thank you to the fantastic team at @nschoral, the artistic and support team for the camp, @drelainechoi for jumping in to help/share/lead along the way, Frances Farrell for being such a thoughtful arranger and teacher, and to all of these dedicated singers who trusted the process throughout the week and sang with total commitment and joy! Community singing is alive and well everyone! 💚 taken in Nova Scotia, Canada by @drmarkramsay

💜 Choir Camp is full of ease and lightness with Dr. Mark Ramsay! Mark brought flow, relaxation, and movement during the five days of mass choir rehearsals. And what exhilaration at our concert on Friday evening!

🙏 Thank you, Mark, for infusing incredible energy into our choral singing in your own unique way! Here’s what some of our singers said they liked about Mark:

❤️ “Mass choir was an outstanding experience and I cannot believe what Doctors Choi and Ramsay were able to help us accomplish in five fantastic days.” –Bonnie Vallentyne (Mississippi Mills, Ontario)
❤️ “I enjoyed working with Mark and Elaine” –Margaret Almack (Pefferlaw, Ontario)

❤️ “Elaine and Mark worked wonders in just five days - I wasn't sure how it would be done and they were great.” –Audrey Roorda (Brantford, Ontario)

❤️ “Not having sung in a formal choir like this, I sense that we have the cream of the crop with conductors Drs Elaine Choi & Mark Ramsay!” –Cathy Reside (Almonte, Ontario)

❤️ “The mass choir pieces were varied and challenging, which I really enjoyed. Elaine and Mark work very well together, and their method of teaching is exceptional.” –Laurie James (Owen Sound, Ontario)

❤️ “I appreciated the Q&A with Mark and Elaine; the more ways we get to interact with them, the better. Conducting workshop was concise and full-of-information; loved it.” –Georgie Donais (Thornbury, Ontario) taken in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church - Owen Sound by @drmarkramsay

A warm round of applause to all involved in this week's residency with the Junges Vokalensemble Hannover and their conductor, Prof. Klaus-Jürgen Etzold, who worked with our choral conducting students and prof. Mark Ramsay.

Junges Vokalensemble Hannover's three-day residency @westernuniversity, as part of a UNESCO #CityOfMusic exchange, concluded with a public concert Wednesday evening, July 23, in von Kuster Hall. 🎶

Congratulations to all on a fantastic concert and a special shoutout to our choral conducting students, Ian Nathaniel Balana, Karen Hu, Iris Janssen, Manishya Jayasundera, and Emer A. Montaño. 🎉
