Like many others around the world, I was shocked and saddened to learn that Nirmal “Nims” Purja (@nimsdai) lost his life two days ago while leading a group on a climb of Broad Peak. To understand his importance and significance to humanity, go watch 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible on Netflix. He pushed the limits of human potential, helped countless people realize their dreams, and brought recognition to his community that had been overlooked for years. We all have our own mountains to climb…he never stopped searching for the next one. He was my hero. If you would like to support his mission visit www.nimsdaifoundation.org #nimspurja #14peaksnothingisimpossible #hero #8000meters #everest by @drmesiwala

Advances in spine care can’t happen without taking some time away from clinical practice and family time. I’m very lucky to have a family that is understanding and helps me juggle many things in life. That means my schedule can be super packed. After a full day of surgery and clinic, I took a late night flight to Denver on Thursday for meetings with several medical device companies the next day. Friday afternoon I flew to Dallas for a dinner meeting and a development lab on Saturday. Saturday night I flew to Boston for another development lab on Sunday. And then I flew home Sunday night just in time to spend some time with my wife before another full week of work. Throughout the weekend my wife and kids reminded me to take some time for myself. My middle daughter also reminded me to “have an ice cream for self care.” I’m a lucky man. by @drmesiwala

Greetings from across the Atlantic! We stopped in London on our way to Zurich for the ISMISS meeting. It was a great reconnecting with surgeons and friends from all over the world. This was the 40th anniversary meeting, held in its city of origin. After presentations, moderating a session, and a board meeting, I am now off to Accra, Ghana for a medical mission focused on ENT/otolaryngology and neurosurgery. We are joining Dr. Ryan Osborne and his team. More to come! by @drmesiwala

A little late, but happy Intl Dog Day to @hector_the_protectorr ! While he is quite literally trained to be a protector, Hector is very playful! He brings a lot of joy into our home and to every person he meets. The smile says it all!

Back in the OR today doing some cervical disc replacements. As you can see the implants themselves are quite small. The first implant is a cage for fusion and the second one is an artificial disc. The approach for both cases is similar and the most important part is the decompression - removing the disc/bone/ligament that are compressing the spinal cord/nerve(s). The obvious benefit of the artificial disc is you maintain mobility and get a faster recovery/return to normal activities.

I want to feature our PA, Khatereh, who has been working with us for several years now! Khatereh brings a wealth of knowledge and experience after working in Neurosurgery for many years, but as an added bonus, is also a chiropractor! This level of cross training, helps our patients get an effective assessment and she is able to manage our patients’ care peri-operatively. We are glad to have you on the team and the patients absolutely love working with you.

Just like the waves, our spines are fluid in movement. As we age, that fluidity decreases. Fortunately, with the advancements in motion preservation spine surgery, we are able to keep patients riding the perfect wave.

Great day in the OR yesterday with a special visit from our colleague @rkerr.physio from @socalelitephysicaltherapy . We had a line up with 3 cervical spine operations including: 2 level disc replacement, a disc replacement + adjacent level fusion, and a disc replacement + posterior foraminotomies.

It’s a good demonstration of various approaches that can be employed to ensure a thorough decompression and treating patient symptoms.

Working with a core group of individuals is critical to the growth (and change) in a practice. In the two photos there are certain individuals of our core team that are missing due to being at a different site, but I am always grateful for the support of the team and what each member brings to the table.
