I have more degrees than a thermometer, four cats, a pilot’s licence and apparently no ability to sit still 😂

But there’s a reason I wanted to include all of this in my “start here” post.

I’m incredibly proud of my career, but I never want my career to become my entire identity.

We spend so many years studying, training, building businesses, chasing the next qualification and trying to become better at what we do. And somewhere along the way, it can become very easy to forget that we’re allowed to build a life outside of it too.

I want to keep learning, keep pushing myself and keep doing work that genuinely matters to me but I also want to fly planes, run ridiculous distances, travel, spend time by the sea, love my people, cuddle my cats and collect experiences that have absolutely nothing to do with what letters come after my name.

And if sharing a little more of that side of my life inspires even one person to remember that you are allowed to be ambitious about your career AND ambitious about your life, then I’ll be very happy.

Your job can be a huge part of who you are without being all of who you are.

✨PUBLISHED!!✨

So happy to tell you that our Consensus Recommendations on the management of PLLA nodules has just been published in the prestigious Aesthetic Surgery Journal!

This is the work of 9 international experts from 4 countries. We came together to share practical guidelines on what to do when you encounter a Sculptra nodules.

🤔 WHY? 🤔
Although uncommon (0.004-0.4%), sculptra nodules can be tricky to manage.
Historically they’ve frequently been misdiagnosed, which has resulted in mismanagement and overtreatment, with poor outcomes for patients.

These guidelines aim to change that - simplified to what injectors should be able to reliably perform in practice, so that patients can get better care and better outcomes.

I had to repost this from @dc_plasticsurgeon IMMEDIATELY because rarely has a truer word been spoken. The aesthetic surgery industry is getting out of hand. 20- and 30-somethings having complex, unnecessary surgery because surgeons are taking it upon themselves to spread filler misinformation. All procedures carry risks (even filler!), and it seems many in this day and age are simply forgetting ETHICS and the fact that for some patients, their best intervention is simply telling them NO.

But when you reach for the scalpel when you know your patient could get a much less costly or risky intervention by having a little filler (or just leaving their face alone entirely) that doesn’t make you the surgeon saviour that makes you the surgeon charlatan.

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

I’m Dr MJ. A doctor, a pilot, a runner. A business owner with more degrees than a thermometer and a fairly committed inability to sit still.

And it’s taken me 41 years to find a balance of works and life that puts more value on life than on work!

I love my work. I’ve spent more than a decade building a business, looking after patients and being available. Always reachable. Always something else to answer.

But I also love flying. Running ridiculous distances. Living by the sea. Our annual pilgrimage to the Nevada desert. Having a life that doesn’t require me to check my inbox halfway through it.

For a long time, I tried to have all of that whilst remaining permanently on call for my own business.

What if someone needs me?
What about the emails?
Should I just check?

And you know what?! I have a very capable team. Things can happen without my supervision. The business does not require me to personally accompany every email on its journey.

I’m still a 500-miles-an-hour person. I have ants in my pants. My version of switching off might involve a marathon rather than a sun lounger.

But the important bit is that I’m doing something because I want to. Not because somebody might need an answer in the next four minutes.

Being a doctor is a huge part of who I am. It was never meant to be the whole of me.

So if you’re new here, welcome. There will be faces, ultrasound, strong opinions, planes, running and the occasional desert disappearance.

And if you also need reminding that you’re allowed to enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard to build—consider this your reminder.

Your inbox will find something else to be dramatic about tomorrow.

The breakouts have stopped. The reminders haven’t.

There’s a point where we need to stop asking skincare to do a job it wasn’t designed for. That doesn’t mean your routine is wrong, or that you haven’t been consistent enough.

Acne scarring deserves a proper assessment. Different scars need different approaches, and “book a course of microneedling” shouldn’t be the automatic answer to every texture concern.

But where it’s appropriate, it’s worth understanding what we’re actually trying to achieve—and why that takes time.

There are plenty of things out of our control that are completely wild about being a human in 2027, but there are also some wild things that make being a human completely amazing.

I’ll start.

I love adult free will!!

Every time I fly on a plane I think… I honestly have no business being up here. How have we actually managed, as humans, to do that? Seriously?

I love that I can have as many cats as I want, and that we’ve all just collectively decided it’s normal to have these little animals living in our houses. Just our little mates. Living in our houses.

Food on demand!! 10/10. Who remembers when takeaway was basically just pizza or Chinese?

Octopuses can solve puzzles, chimpanzees can communicate using sign language, and there are completely alien-looking things flying above your head and swimming around in the ocean every single day. Some of them can literally regrow limbs.

And tomorrow, if you want to, you can wake up, take it all a little less seriously and, if you really want to… book a flight somewhere. Touch some grass, see a waterfall!

Sometimes you win.
Sometimes you fall flat on your face.

Berlin was the second. Did a roly-poly at 23km and then in a moment of truly elite decision-making I got up and kept running.

I might have finished in an ego-thrilling sub 4 (just!) but my ankle isn’t chuffed by it one bit.

One decision in one race that’s cost me weeks of training.

We live in a world that rewards grit and getting it done and it’s very easy to fall into the trap of roughing it out. And that decision is going to haunt me for a while.

Here’s some sound advice: look at the bigger picture, not just the moment. Don’t be a dick and run 19km on a sprained ankle. x taken in Berlin, Germany by @drmjclinic

Your skin has been through summer. Now we deal with the evidence.

Sun exposure, heat, sweat, holidays and the occasional abandonment of your skincare routine can leave the complexion looking dull, congested, uneven or simply a little bit fed up.

Enter: chemical peel season.

A carefully selected peel can support skin renewal and help improve concerns such as uneven tone, texture, congestion and superficial pigmentation.

But “chemical peel” is a category—not one treatment that should be applied identically to every face.

The right formulation and strength depend on your skin, the concern we’re treating and how much downtime is appropriate for you. Sometimes gentle and progressive is exactly what is needed; stronger does not automatically mean better.

Autumn is a lovely time to reassess your skin after summer and begin a properly planned course—but SPF remains non-negotiable, even when the sandals have gone away.
