One of the most striking things about Africa’s new trade initiative, the AfCFTA, is its developmental ambition.

I have always found persuasive the idea that to develop is to have a wider range of choices.

My new book, Regional Trade Agreements in Africa: Implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area, is, in many ways, about that idea. It asks whether Africa’s new trade initiative can help expand the choices available to African people, firms, and states.

Towards its later chapters, the book turns its lens to Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia. These were the three research sites where I buried myself in questions of trade, law, and development between 2020 and 2022.

The book asks what conditions must be present for the AfCFTA to produce development where it is carried out.

I am grateful to Professors Faizel Ismail and Ada Ordor for their guidance, to the University of Cape Town for the support that made the work possible, to Routledge for giving the book a home, and to the many people whose faith in Africa’s future keeps this kind of work meaningful.

Their hope matters because the African century will not arrive by slogan. It will have to be studied, built, argued for, and carried by people who refuse to give up on the continent.
