A day I’ll never forget.

Eight years ago today, I suffered a spinal cord injury that left me paralyzed from the waist down. I was told there was a chance I might never walk again.

Today, I am walking.

At the time, it didn’t feel like an opportunity. It felt like loss, uncertainty, and fear. There were no guarantees. But through discipline, hard work, faith, and mindset, I fought my way back.

Looking back now, I’m grateful for that crucible. That trial shaped me.

It made me a better father.
A better husband.
And a better doctor.

Because when I sit with a patient receiving a skin cancer diagnosis, or a teenager struggling with acne, I understand something deeper: every person experiences their struggle as real, heavy, and personal. Pain isn’t measured by comparison.

There are still days I forget what I went through and other days my body reminds me with neuropathy, pain, spasms and so on.

But I wouldn’t trade the journey.

Often the hardest chapters in our lives become the ones that shape who we are meant to be.
