Ironman Canada (Ottawa) – Ironman #6.

This race had it all.

Rain. Humidity. The emotional highs and lows that only an Ironman can deliver.

The day started with a challenge. A wetsuit-optional swim meant racing in the river without the buoyancy of a wetsuit. For those who know me, you also know swimming has never been my strongest discipline. I came out of the water with an all-time personal worst swim of 1:14, putting me on my back foot early and leaving me 39th in my age group.

But the beauty of Ironman is that the race is never won, or lost in the first hour.

Once I got on the bike, it was time to get to work. On a fast, flat course, I was able to do what I love most: push big watts. I steadily worked my way through the field, moving from 39th to 8th in my age group. My 4:38 bike split was the 27th fastest overall and 5th fastest in my age group.

Then came the marathon.

They called it a flat course, but nearly 200 metres of elevation gain tells a different story. The goal was simple: stay patient, stay steady, and stay strong. There were moments of passing others and moments of being passed, but that’s Ironman. I kept fighting all the way to the finish, crossing the line 7th in my age group and 39th overall among all men.

This result means a lot.

It came after one of the busiest and most challenging years of my life—major changes at work, buying a new home, and working through injuries. There were plenty of reasons why this race could have gone sideways, but instead it became a reminder that resilience pays off.

A huge thank you to my incredible wife, whose unwavering support makes chasing these dreams possible. To my family, who have always been my biggest cheerleaders. To my coach, Jason Pohl, for believing in me and continuing to push me toward my Ironman goals. And to my career, which gives me the opportunity to pursue this passion at the highest level.

I’m proud of this performance.

But we’re not done yet.

The best is still to come. taken in Ottawa, Ontario by @drrogermenta

We live in a world where everyone has an opinion about who you should be, how you should act, and what success is supposed to look like.

The older I get, the more I realize that none of that really matters.

A few things do.

1. Be a kind person. It sounds simple, but kindness goes a long way. Support people, celebrate their wins, and give back the same energy you hope to receive.

2. Don’t let other people dream for you. Their fears, opinions, and limitations don’t have to become yours. Create your own vision and chase the things that genuinely excite you.

3. Surround yourself with three types of people:

* People who know more than you — learn from them.
* People who know less than you — teach and support them.
* People walking beside you — they’ll keep you grounded.

At the end of the day, life isn’t about becoming who others expect you to be.

It’s about becoming the best version of yourself while helping others do the same.

That’s a life worth building. 🤝

This year I’m taking part in the Branch Out Bike Tour, an event that raises money for neuroscience research and helps support advancements in the understanding and treatment of neurological conditions.

As many of you know, movement, health, and performance are a huge part of my life, which is why supporting research that can improve lives through better understanding of the brain is something I care deeply about.

FUN should probably be the magic word in sport.

Whether you’re running, riding, lifting, playing pickleball, or doing whatever keeps you sane… if you’re not getting paid for it, it should probably bring you joy.

Somewhere along the way we all got obsessed with the data. Pace, power, HRV, Strava posts, and making everything look impressive online. Meanwhile, most people genuinely do not care about your splits… they just want to see if you’re enjoying your life.

I say this as someone whose entire life revolves around triathlon. I love the structure, the suffering, and chasing big goals. But fun still matters.

Sometimes fun is a huge training day.Sometimes it’s coffee after the ride.Sometimes it’s a patio beer with friends after a long run pretending it counts as recovery nutrition.

Could I eat cleaner and be more disciplined? Probably. But some of the best memories and strongest connections in life happen outside the training plan.

Sport should add to your life, not shrink it.

Get outside, enjoy the fresh air, train hard, laugh more, and don’t forget the people around you. Years from now nobody will remember your FTP or average pace… but they will remember the adventures and how you made them feel.

The Eugene Marathon is officially in the books, my first standalone marathon, and one I’m incredibly proud of.

After taking some time to reflect both personally and with my coach, one thing stands out most… I executed the plan exactly as we trained for.

The goal was simple: 4:15/km from start to finish. Trust the process. Stay disciplined. And that’s exactly what I did, my final watch average? 4:15/km.

Official time: 3:00:21.

Of course, missing sub-3 by 21 seconds stings a little. But perspective matters. For a first marathon attempt, I’m proud. Really proud.

A few lessons came with it too:
My watch clocked 42.53 km, and I learned very quickly that running tangents in a crowded marathon is an art form of its own. Nutrition was executed perfectly, stomach was calm, and overall race day went to plan… minus one very humbling 20-second porta potty stop at 28 km that may have cost me that sub-3 barrier.

But that’s racing. We learn, we adapt, and we come back sharper.

One major takeaway? Marathoners are a different breed. They absolutely send it from the gun, and the pain is immediate, sharp, and relentless in a way that surprised me. It’s a very different kind of hurt compared to Ironman. In Ironman, the marathon feels more like a long, grinding sufferfest. In a marathon? It’s controlled aggression for 42.2 km.

And while I loved the challenge… I definitely missed my bike.

So now, it’s time to shift gears and get back to what I love most, Ironman.

Next stop: Ironman Canada in Ottawa on August 2, where we prepare for something really special.

Lastly, none of this happens alone. A huge thank you to my biggest supporter, my wife. These accomplishments are just as much hers as they are mine. We are a team in every sense of the word, pushing each other daily to grow, improve, and chase big goals together.

First marathon: complete.
Lessons: learned.
Fire: still burning.

Now we build.

CONTEST TIME

This Sunday I’m racing my first marathon and I want you to guess my finish time.

This build has had a bit of everything. Snowy Calgary miles, getting sick, work stress, and some key training in Arizona with the Mauna crew. Not perfect, but consistent.

I’ll be fueling with Victus on race day and giving away a $50 Victus package to whoever guesses closest.

It’s been my go to this build. Easy on the gut, steady energy, and reliable when it matters most.

For context, my best Ironman marathon is 3:20:55 from Ironman Texas 2024. Sunday is a different test on fresh legs.

It’s that time. Time to turn the page.

This Sunday I’ll be lining up for my first marathon.

Yeah, I’ve got big goals. And yeah… we’ll see what the day brings. That’s part of it. You can’t force 42.2km, you show up, you respect it, and you find out who you are over those hours.

I’ve done the work. Not perfectly, but honestly.

This build didn’t come easy. There were weeks where it felt like everything was working against the plan. Family getting sick, getting sick myself, endless snow in Calgary, work stress stacking up. Life didn’t pause just because I had a goal.

But none of that is an excuse. It’s just part of the story.

Because in the same breath, there’s been a lot of good. Time in Arizona with the Mauna crew, consistent training, lessons learned, and a coach who made sure I showed up ready, even when things weren’t ideal.

That’s what this build really was. Not perfect conditions, but consistent belief. Adjusting, showing up, staying in it.

So this weekend isn’t just about a time on the clock. It’s about putting all of that together, the messy, the good, the uncertain, and seeing what comes out the other side.

Grateful for the people in my corner. Grateful for the work behind me.

Now it’s time to run.

One year ago, I fractured my clavicle and had surgery.

For some, that would mark a year of pain or frustration.
For me… it became one of the best years of my life.

It showed me that when you surround yourself with the right people, coaches, friends, and family anything is possible.

This year didn’t just test me, it built me.

My new practice at Solo Sport Systems was flooded… and came back stronger than ever.
I married my forever plus-one, bought a home, and stood beside my best friend as his best man.

And in between it all countless hours of training.
Fighting my way back, then pushing even further.

From comeback mode to racing again with incredible people in Marbella at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships… to an unforgettable honeymoon in Tenerife.

As the sun sets on this past year, I can honestly say#
what felt like a setback turned into something far greater.

Here’s to resilience, good people, and never staying down. taken in Solo Sport Systems by @drrogermenta

Swimming has always been the discipline I’ve had to work the hardest at.

Lately I’m finally starting to see small improvements not from swimming more, but from swimming better.

Less fighting the water.
More focus on position, catch, and rhythm.

Turns out progress in the pool isn’t always about more meters… sometimes it’s about better ones.

Small gains. Long game. 🏊‍♂️
