Hi everyone, and welcome to my page! My name is Sally, and I’m a board-certified pediatrician and lactation consultant. My goal here is to provide parents and caregivers with practical, evidence-based information to help them navigate the challenges of raising a child- from newborn care to supporting their growth into healthy adults, and everything in between! by @drsallypeds

Answers to two common questions I get from new parents 💕

I personally chose to wear a mask around my newborn niece this weekend not because I was sick, but because I had just traveled and because as a pediatrician, I’m exposed to a lot of illness every day.

If you’re ever not sure, trust your gut and don’t hesitate to have the convo with your pediatrician!

I know content has slowed down, and I wanted to share why. As a Palestinian, these past few months have been unbearably heavy. The weight of what’s happening in my homeland is something I carry daily, and some days, it’s been paralyzing.
On top of that, the rise in anti-medicine sentiment online has been disheartening. I’ve been called things no one who’s dedicated over a decade of their life to caring for children should ever be called. Fourteen years of training, compassion, and service but only to be met with bullying and baseless accusations. It’s exhausting. The internet has given people the freedom to be cruel without consequence, and some days, it’s too much.
Between that, starting a new job, and adjusting to a long commute, staying consistent here has been a real challenge. But please know this: I haven’t stopped creating. I’m still writing content every day I just haven’t had the energy to film it (yet).
This space still means a lot to me and so do you: the ones who’ve stayed, supported, and understood. I see you, and I’m grateful.
I’m not giving up on this page! Thank you for your patience and for sticking around 💛 by @drsallypeds

We all know who’s really in charge 😂😂😂

All jokes aside, this clinic manager right here is the best

I cannot stress how important it is to take these three steps before you give the doctor a sample of urine for testing!

A contaminated sample can yield inaccurate results, which then can lead to unnecessary antibiotics 💊

Why I turned up for my flu shot this season and why you and your family should too!

🦠 There were at least 47 million illnesses, 610,000 hospitalizations, and 26,000 deaths from the flu last season including 200 pediatric deaths

☠️ The flu has killed more than 80,000 people in 1 season, including many healthy people with no prior medical history

🚩 Last Flu season was the worst in over a decade

💉 The flu shot helps prevent hospitalization and severe complications from the flu which include but are not limited to pneumonia, muscle breakdown, ear infections, dehydration, acute necrotizing encephalopathy and death

⭐️ The flu shot does not give you the flu and you can still get it if you have an egg allergy!

✨ Start preparing your child in advance. Let them know where you’re going, what to expect, who they’ll see, and why it’s important. Include a conversation about examination of the private parts by the doctor if going for a physical.

✨ If there’s a chance they might get a shot, don’t assume they won’t and then catch them by surprise. That can break trust. Instead, explain that sometimes shots are part of staying healthy, and if it happens today, you’ll be right there with them. I think promising a treat or an exciting activity after the visit is always a plus!

✨ Use simple, age-appropriate language. Can read books or watch a video about going to the doctor’s

✨ Role-play the visit at home. Let your child pretend to be the doctor and the patient, it helps them feel more in control.

✨ Bring a comfort item. A favorite toy, book, or blanket can make a huge difference.

Pediatric visits don’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation, you can help your child feel safe, informed, and even proud of how brave they were!

$Facts vs. Myths Part 6: A Collaboration 🤩 We’ve joined forces to tackle misinformation and bust common vaccine myths, because facts matter and public health depends on it! 👇🏼 🛝 Children are exposed to far more antigens daily through food and play. Vaccines use a fraction of what the immune system can handle, even when given together. ✨ Extensive research shows no link between vaccines and autism. The original study suggesting this was retracted due to falsified data. 👶🏽 Studies show no causal link between vaccines and SIDS. Vaccines protect against serious infections that could otherwise contribute to poor outcomes in infants. 🦠 From large-scale studies, there is no conclusive evidence linking vaccines to autoimmune disease onset. 🦀 There is no evidence that the HPV vaccine causes infertility. In fact, it protects against HPV-related cancers that can impact fertility, like cervical cancer. 👩🏽‍🔬 Vaccines contain tiny, safe amounts of ingredients like preservatives and stabilizers, all tested and approved by health authorities. They’re used to keep vaccines effective and safe. Not going to lie, I teared up watching this 🥹

This perfectly shows how giving children room and patience supports their growth and learning!

Thank you for your patience with me and for sticking around!
The move is complete but I am still trying to figure out a routine; my commute is now 45-50 minutes each way instead of 7-20 minutes so I am struggling to juggle everything. @dr.tommymartin can you please teach me your ways? 😂

I have so much planned and promise to keep the pediatric and lactation content coming!
There are a couple of fun collabs in the making too 🤩

Pediatric Facts vs. Myths Part 5- Lactation Edition 🤗

Here are the facts 👇🏼

🤰🏾While breastfeeding can delay ovulation (especially in the first 6 months after birth), it’s not a reliable form of birth control unless very specific conditions are met.

👶🏼 Frequent/cluster feeding is normal. It helps increase supply and doesn’t mean you’re not producing enough.

🤱🏻 Breast size doesn’t determine milk supply.

💤 Babies who are bottle or formula fed don’t necessarily sleep better.

☝🏼Discomfort may occur at first, but persistent pain is not normal. It could signal latch issues, tongue tie, or breast infection, and should be addressed.

🩸Babies are born with iron stores that typically last about 4-6 months, I personally recommend switching from vitamin D to a multivitamin with iron starting at 6 months for exclusively breast fed babies, until they’re consuming more iron rich foods (well into toddlerhood).

🩻 Vitamin D is important for newborns. Formula fed babies can stop supplementation once they’re drinking at least 34oz of formula per day. Breast fed babies should continue supplementation for at least the first year of life.
