“Educating a girl is educating a society”

Zubair is a member of one of the War Child-supported local school councils in Afghanistan. He says the EdTech program has helped increase students’ interest in attending school, including girls who previously missed months of classes when accompanying their families during seasonal movements.

“Educating a girl is educating a society, because when a mother, for example, is literate, she raises a literate child and raises a good child. She has awareness and information, and it is clear and evident that everyone has this wish.” — Zubair, School Council Member

His hope is one shared by his community: that girls can continue learning, gain knowledge and pursue futures as doctors, engineers and professionals.

At War Child, we know that when barriers to education are removed, the impact can reach a girl, her family and generations to come.

This needs no further explanation, sadly. And the violation and suppression of women and girls the world over continues. Yet the global political response, almost exclusively from men, has been to cut aid, when 80 percent of the world’s refugees and displaced people are women and children. This is about so much more than the Cornell case, or the trial of Canadian hockey players. It is a pattern. It is a culture. And it needs to stop. A society that destroys its women and girls destroys itself. by @drsamnutt

I’m so lucky to know some truly exceptional people, the kind who fill my heart with boundless joy. The ones who pick me up, dust me off, and send me back into the world. They know who they are and what they mean to me, always. I took this photo right after sharing this story with friends on the weekend:

There’s a spot in Iraq I have been to many times, where the Tigris converges with the Euphrates river. I wrote about it in my book (before someone accuses me of “self-plagiarizing” which, BTW, isn’t a thing, by ontological design), tho the context was different. It’s a walled off garden with one hollow, dead, branchless tree. The tree itself is a historic tourist site, believed to be the location of the biblical “Garden of Eden”, and the stump its last, desiccated descendant. When u ask the locals what happened they all tell the same story - it was alive until some time in the 70s or 80s. But tourists would come and everyone wanted a piece of it for themselves. So bit by bit, a leaf here, a small branch there, this “tree of life” withered and died at the hands of the very people who sought to enjoy it, celebrate it and who found meaning in it. And that’s the thing with life, sometimes.

I not infrequently have the privilege of giving convocation addresses and honestly it’s hard to come up with new “life lessons” every time. Let’s face it, I’ve had a finite number of epiphanies and not all were created equal. But here’s one I know to be true: don’t pick the pluckers. Pick the ones who always show up and bring the love and care and compassion and curiosity and energy and tenderness that restores you. Who give as good as they get. Those who know, know this Lightning Seeds song is one I put on whenever we are dancing around like lunatics, because it generally isn’t well known but captures so much of this feeling for me…”don’t sell the dreams you should be keeping”.

And to all of you who are that in my life, the starry eyes and the starry skies, thank god we found each other. Let’s never stop. Happy Monday. 😘 by @drsamnutt

Today is “international day of peace”, which is hard for anyone immersed in the devastation of war to wrap their head around except with unfailing irony. We are now confronting more wars than in the last 30 years. More displaced people. More death. More destruction. More acute hunger. More atrocity. That’s not hyperbole - it’s the reality War Child and all humanitarian orgs are currently facing worldwide. And the global response? To cut aid. To double down on arms and quadruple military spending. USAID wasn’t the only casualty of misguided and self-serving budgetary decisions. Canada, the UK and many others have followed suit. Most aid budgets within our areas of operation are 1/4 percent funded as millions face acute starvation, health services are driven to a halt and children are denied schooling and other basic protections.

Peace isn’t altruism. It isn’t naive. It is harder to achieve, difficult to sustain and more complicated to implement. It is doing everything everywhere all at once. But it isn’t impossible, either. It is necessary. It is our only safeguard against our mutual destruction. And it is worth striving for, investing in, and pursuing at all cost.

This photo is from my first experience in a war zone, in Somalia in 1995. It’s the only one that exists. Fresh out of medical school, young, idealistic, I believed in all the human rights instruments that remind us of what we owe each other, as human beings. Dignity. Respect. Agency. Care. To not attack one another, be cruel to one another, erase one another, target or torture one another.

I still believe in the power and primacy of peace, tho with the cranky exhaustion of someone who has seen what is lost when we fail, and who wonders why these lessons are seemingly so hard to learn. Yet I also understand that isn’t a reason to give up. It’s a reason to work harder.

Thank you to all who give to our work supporting peace throughout the world. We couldn’t do it without you. ❤️ by @drsamnutt

War Child was born from years of firsthand experience that showed humanitarian support needed to go further than responding to crisis. It needs to invest in solutions built to last.

Hear @drsamnutt, War Child’s Founder and President, share how working in conflict settings inspired an approach rooted in local leadership, sustainable systems, and communities as decision makers.

For many girls in Afghanistan, returning to school is not simple.

Through #LEAD, War Child Canada supported the re-enrolment of 1,000 out-of-school girls in the past year, providing learning materials and school supplies to help remove barriers to primary education. Across the project to date, 2,000 children have been supported back into learning.
At the same time, War Child is working with public schools to strengthen learning environments by supporting improvements like temporary classrooms, solar power, computers and other essential resources.

Because getting children back into primary school is only the first step. Helping them stay there matters too.

What makes War Child different is that local people lead the way, with staff in the countries where we work helping shape the programs and decisions that affect their communities.

Back to school means something different when conflict has kept you out of the classroom.

This year, War Child returned to Sudan and launched a new education and child protection project at two schools in Khartoum. 1,266 students, including about 800 girls, will have greater access to safe, inclusive education, with rehabilitated classrooms, improved water and WASH facilities, and teachers trained to support children affected by conflict.

Because every child deserves a safe place to learn, grow, and imagine what comes next.
