When local organizations thrive, opportunities for young people grow.

Through our BRIDGE project in Uganda, War Child is proud to be part of the @MastercardFoundation's Young Africa Works initiative. Our teams partner with refugee-led organizations like Community Empowerment for Creative Innovations (CECI) to expand access to education and economic opportunities.

Beyond supporting young learners, our partnership is helping CECI strengthen its organizational capacity, build sustainable systems and reach more young people.

As Benson from CECI shares:
“The consortium is working and it has also increased the demand for services.”

We're excited to see this partnership highlighted in the latest Young Africa Works Uganda Digest, showcasing how locally led solutions are creating lasting change.

“Educating a girl is educating a society”

Zubair is a member of one of the War Child-supported local school councils in Afghanistan. He says the EdTech program has helped increase students’ interest in attending school, including girls who previously missed months of classes when accompanying their families during seasonal movements.

“Educating a girl is educating a society, because when a mother, for example, is literate, she raises a literate child and raises a good child. She has awareness and information, and it is clear and evident that everyone has this wish.” — Zubair, School Council Member

His hope is one shared by his community: that girls can continue learning, gain knowledge and pursue futures as doctors, engineers and professionals.

At War Child, we know that when barriers to education are removed, the impact can reach a girl, her family and generations to come.

This World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate tutors like Rameen in South Sudan, who are helping young people find their way back to education.

Through War Child’s Pathways to Empowerment (P2E) project, Rameen teaches agriculture in the catch-up learning program, designed to give young people who have dropped out of school another opportunity to learn. She has seen young women, including mothers with babies, return to the classroom eager and ready to learn.

“They are even eager to learn. And they come early. They are punctual.” — Madam Rameen

P2E also equips teachers with student-centered teaching methods that encourage critical thinking and participation, helping educators create classrooms where learners can thrive.

Today, we celebrate the teachers creating second chances, one classroom at a time.

On the International Day of Non-Violence, we’re reminded that peace is not only the absence of conflict, it’s also built through the skills young people use to navigate challenges, communicate and resolve problems.

In Afghanistan, 16-year-old Asadullah grew up surrounded by poverty and conflict at home. Through War Child’s Life Skills program, he learned to manage his emotions, communicate with others, solve problems and make positive decisions. Today, he says he has greater confidence in himself and hope for his future.

For children and young people affected by conflict, these skills can help break cycles of violence and build stronger, more peaceful communities.

Peace starts with possibility. And young people can help lead the way.

In South Sudan, Johnson faced challenges that made learning difficult, from sharing notebooks with siblings to going without pens for class.

Through War Child Canada’s Geared for Success program, Johnson received essential school supplies — exercise books, pens, and pencils — that helped him stay organized, participate fully in class, and regain confidence in his studies.

“My family no longer struggles to buy materials, and I can take notes and revise my lessons properly,” he says.

Johnson now dreams of excelling in his exams and helping improve his school.
When young people are equipped to learn, they build the foundation for stronger, more peaceful communities.

War Child was born from years of firsthand experience that showed humanitarian support needed to go further than responding to crisis. It needs to invest in solutions built to last.

Hear @drsamnutt, War Child’s Founder and President, share how working in conflict settings inspired an approach rooted in local leadership, sustainable systems, and communities as decision makers.

Watch the conversation on @theunpopularview_mbrown podcast at the link in our bio.

For many girls in Afghanistan, returning to school is not simple.

Through #LEAD, War Child Canada supported the re-enrolment of 1,000 out-of-school girls in the past year, providing learning materials and school supplies to help remove barriers to primary education. Across the project to date, 2,000 children have been supported back into learning.
At the same time, War Child is working with public schools to strengthen learning environments by supporting improvements like temporary classrooms, solar power, computers and other essential resources.

Because getting children back into primary school is only the first step. Helping them stay there matters too.

We’re proud to see our BRIDGE project highlighted at the recent @MastercardFoundation Uganda Partner Convening, focused on strengthening pathways from learning to dignified and fulfilling work for young people.
