OPEN PHYSIQUE UPDATE: Here’s what most pros won’t show you…

Everyone loves posting their strengths.

Today I’m showing you my weaknesses.

At 50 years old, an IFBB Pro, and deep into prep, I can clearly see where I need to improve if I want to stand on stage and be competitive.

My lower back needs more detail.
My glutes need more separation.
My arms can be bigger.
My posing can be sharper.

That’s the truth.

Most people think pro bodybuilders are genetically perfect.

They’re not.

The difference is we’re brutally honest about what needs work.

That’s why most people stay stuck.

Their ego protects them from reality.

Reality is what creates results.

I’ve spent over 30 years in this sport and one lesson never changes:

Your strengths get you noticed.
Your weaknesses determine how far you go.

So instead of hiding from them, I’m attacking them.

The plan from here:

✅ More focused execution
✅ Better posing practice
✅ Extra attention to weak body parts
✅ Daily cardio
✅ Consistent nutrition
✅ Zero excuses

No shortcuts.
No magic supplements.
No secret drug protocol.

Just identifying the problem and going to work.

If you’re serious about transforming your physique, stop asking:

“What am I good at?”

Start asking:

“What am I avoiding because it’s hard?”

Drop a comment with the body part you’re currently trying to improve and let’s build it together.

🔥 SHOULDER WEEK: Your rear delts aren’t growing because you’re turning THIS into a back exercise.

Want that 3D shoulder look from the side AND the back? Stop neglecting your rear delts.

🚨 PAIN
Most lifters train front and side delts hard… then wonder why their shoulders still look incomplete.

Even when they target rear delts, poor body position lets the lats and upper back dominate the movement.

🏆 PROOF
After 30+ years of bodybuilding and reaching IFBB Pro level, one lesson has stayed consistent:

The exercise is only as good as the way you execute it.

🧠 PHILOSOPHY
You don’t always need another exercise.

Sometimes you need to understand how to make the equipment you already use hit a muscle differently.

That’s one of the pro bodybuilding secrets I want ordinary gym-goers to understand.

🎯 PLAN — TRY THIS REAR DELT HACK

Use the lat pulldown machine, but change the mechanics:

👉 Don’t sit completely upright and simply pull toward your chest — that shifts the emphasis toward a conventional back movement.

👉 Lean your torso back and keep that position stable.

👉 Drive the elbows out and back rather than down toward your sides.

👉 Pull the attachment toward your face/upper chest area.

👉 Think about moving from the rear delts, not just moving the weight.

👉 Control the negative and keep tension where you want it.

🔥 DON’T JUST PULL THE WEIGHT. CHANGE THE ANGLE. CHANGE THE MUSCLE EMPHASIS.

Save this for your next shoulder workout and send it to someone whose rear delts need bringing up.

📕 Want more bodybuilding principles without the unnecessary complexity?

THE PREP breaks down the methods I’ve learned from decades in bodybuilding into something you can actually apply.

🔥 SHOULDER WEEK: Want WIDER shoulders? Stop doing your cable laterals like this.

Most people think building capped delts is about throwing more weight around.

It isn’t.

PAIN 🚨
If your cable lateral raises turn into straight-arm swings, you’re making the movement harder to control and often limiting how effectively you can load and target the side delts.

PROOF 🏆
I’m an IFBB Pro and British Champion with 30+ years of training experience — and one thing I’ve learned is that the smallest technical adjustments can completely change an exercise.

PHILOSOPHY 🧠
You don’t need to train like a professional bodybuilder.

You need to understand WHY bodybuilders train the way they do.

That’s what I simplify for everyday lifters.

PLAN 🎯
On your next cable side lateral raise:

👉 Keep a slight bend in the elbow
👉 Maintain that elbow position throughout the rep
👉 Think “lead with the elbow” rather than lifting your hand
👉 Raise under control — don’t swing
👉 Keep tension on the lateral delt
👉 Progress the load without sacrificing execution

Think ELBOWS OUT → DELTS ON. 🔥

Save this for your next shoulder workout and send it to someone who wants bigger, wider shoulders.

And this is just ONE of the bodybuilding principles I simplify in THE PREP.

So I was in the toilet @simplygymbilston and 2 American guys were talking about training as you get older and loosing muscle! I overheard them as I was finishing my workout 🏋🏽‍♀️ (in the toilet for some reason 😂) 3 RULES FOR BUILDING MUSCLE AFTER 50

Then you give three genuinely useful principles, for example:

1. Stimulate—don’t annihilate.
Enough hard sets to create adaptation without generating recovery demands you can’t sustain.

2. Progress without ego lifting.
Progressive overload doesn’t only mean adding plates. Reps, execution, ROM and control count.

3. Recovery becomes part of your programme.
Training is the stimulus. Adaptation occurs afterward.

Scene 5 — Conversion

Real footage of your current physique followed by an older competition image.

DRU: “I’ve spent more than 30 years learning what actually works. Now I simplify those bodybuilding methods so you don’t have to spend 30 years figuring them out.”

On screen:

PRO METHODS. SIMPLIFIED.

You don’t need to live like a PRO BODYBUILDER to learn how to build muscle like one. 👇🏾

Most people don’t fail because they’re lazy.
They fail because they’ve been given too much information and not enough direction.

PAIN ❌
I see ordinary people trying to copy professional bodybuilding diets, complicated training splits and extreme routines — then wondering why they can’t stay consistent.

PROOF 🏆
I’ve spent 30+ years bodybuilding, became a British Champion and earned my IFBB Pro status.

And one of the biggest lessons I learned?

Getting in shape doesn’t need to be complicated.

PHILOSOPHY 🧠
The difference isn’t another “secret exercise.”

It’s understanding the fundamentals:
Training with purpose.
Eating with structure.
Knowing when to push.
Knowing when to adjust.
And repeating the basics long enough for them to work.

That’s what I want to give ordinary people — the lessons of professional bodybuilding, without making you live like a professional bodybuilder.

PLAN 📖
I put those principles into THE PREP — my straightforward guide to taking control of your training, nutrition and physique.

The person on BOTH sides of this picture is me.

The difference was having a plan and executing it.

So ask yourself:

ONE DAY… OR DAY ONE? 🔥

And SAVE this post for the day motivation disappears — because that’s when the plan matters most.

🔥 OVER 50? THESE 7 RULES COULD KEEP YOU BUILDING MUSCLE FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS.

Here are 7 things I believe every lifter over 50 should remember:

1️⃣ WARM UP — BUT DON’T WEAR YOURSELF OUT
Prepare the joints, increase blood flow and rehearse the movement. Your warm-up should improve your working sets, not steal energy from them.

2️⃣ KEEP TRAINING HARD
Age isn’t an excuse to turn every workout into rehabilitation. You still need progressive resistance and genuine effort to give your body a reason to maintain and build muscle.

3️⃣ PROTECT YOUR JOINTS
Muscle can be willing when tendons and joints aren’t. Control the eccentric, choose exercises that suit YOUR structure and stop chasing weight just to impress the gym.

4️⃣ RECOVERY IS PART OF THE PROGRAM
At 20, you could sometimes get away with poor sleep and chaotic training. Over 50, recovery becomes programming: sleep, nutrition, stress management and sensible training volume all matter.

5️⃣ PROTEIN BECOMES EVEN MORE IMPORTANT
You’re not just training — you’re giving your body a reason to preserve lean tissue. Build your meals around sufficient high-quality protein.

6️⃣ MOBILITY SHOULD SUPPORT STRENGTH
You don’t need to become a yoga master. You need enough usable range of motion to train safely, move well and keep performing the exercises that build muscle.

7️⃣ STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO YOUR 25-YEAR-OLD SELF
Your goal isn’t to recreate your younger body.

👉 Build the strongest, leanest, most capable version of the body you have NOW.

That’s my philosophy.

📌 Save this for your next training block.
↗️ Send it to someone who thinks getting older means getting weaker.

I’ve had the privilege of many photo shoots ➡️➡️➡️➡️over the years, I’ve never seen myself as photogenic but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved with what God has given me. However I’ve always wanted people to value me based on who I am and not what they see, I suppose that’s why I feel a bit cringy about some aspects and even some of my pictures 🫣 That being said though, I’ve worked hard and respect myself for the sacrifices, who doesn’t like it just doesn’t like it but I’m not ashamed.
I will continue to enjoy training, working out and making a difference to others in a positive way if I can, but for the most part, I just want to be happy and proud of myself.

STOP doing dumbbell rows like they’re the only way to build a BIGGER BACK. 👀

If your goal is back thickness, lat development and progressive overload, a machine row can give you advantages that a dumbbell simply can’t.

After 30+ years of bodybuilding and earning my IFBB Pro status, one thing I’ve learned is this: the “harder” exercise isn’t automatically the better exercise. The muscle doesn’t care about tradition — it responds to tension.

PAIN: You’re rowing week after week, but your grip, balance or lower back gives up before the muscles you’re actually trying to grow.

PROOF: Switch to a supported machine row and you can potentially:
🔥 LOAD MORE WEIGHT because stability demands are reduced.
🔥 CHANGE YOUR HAND POSITION to find the path that gives you the strongest contraction.
🔥 CREATE A STEADIER REP so you can focus on controlling the eccentric, stretching and driving the elbow back.

PHILOSOPHY: Don’t choose exercises because the pros use them. Choose them because you understand why they work.

That’s what I’m here to teach — bodybuilding principles made simple for ordinary people who want extraordinary results.

PLAN: Next back session, try your dumbbell row first. Then try a supported machine row using a controlled stretch, hard elbow drive and deliberate squeeze. Don’t just move the weight — make the weight move the muscle.

💾 SAVE THIS for your next back workout.
📲 SEND IT to someone who needs a better back day.
💬 COMMENT “ROWS” if you want more IFBB Pro techniques broken down like this.

📕 Want the bigger picture? The Prep breaks down the principles I use to take the guesswork out of transforming your physique. Link in my bio.

Current Instagram guidance increasingly emphasizes searchable phrases in the caption and first-frame text rather than relying on hashtag stuffing, so I’d keep “machine row,” “back workout,” “build a bigger back,” “lat development,” and “back thickness” prominent in your spoken audio/on-screen copy too.
