Atlanta has been home to generations of LGBTQ+ people who have built community, created culture, organized, cared for one another, and made space for us to thrive. Yet Atlanta remains the largest metro area in the country without a brick and mortar LGBTQ+ community center.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be serving on the Steering Committee for Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ Community Center, with a focus on supporting community engagement throughout this process.

A lot of my work over the years has been about building community and creating spaces where LGBTQ+ people, especially trans young people, BIPOC folks, and people who are too often left out of these conversations, can feel connected, supported, and like they actually belong. I’m excited to bring that experience to this work and help make sure the center we build reflects the people who will actually use it.

More than 2,800 people across 204 zip codes participated in the Community Input Survey, and 97% said Atlanta needs an LGBTQ+ community center. Our community has made it pretty clear that we are ready for this.

For me, community engagement has to be more than asking people for their input. It means building relationships, listening to the people who aren’t always in the room, making sure people have real opportunities to shape what gets built, and staying connected to community throughout the process.

I’m excited to work alongside so many LGBTQ+ leaders and community members across Atlanta to help make this happen.

Atlanta deserves an LGBTQ+ community center built with us, by us, and for us. I’m grateful to have a seat at the table and even more committed to making sure more of our community has one too.

Follow @atlgbtqcenter to stay connected, learn more about the process, and find ways to get involved.
