What does safety look like for trans women, trans feminine people, and other folks of feminine experience in fraternities and other male‑dominated Greek spaces?

In this episode, Dr. Van Bailey and Lee Dyer name the risks for trans women and femme non‑binary people: being sexualized, targeted, or punished simply for existing in “male” spaces that already struggle with gendered and anti‑LGBTQ violence. They underline that pushing trans people out of sororities and “women’s spaces” doesn’t make anyone safer; it often leaves trans women navigating parties, houses, and lines where misogyny and transphobia collide, and where the threat of harassment or assault is very real.

This hits harder when you remember we are talking about students—young people seeking community in orgs that preach “brotherhood” and “sisterhood” while some members decide who is and isn’t worth protecting.

Is it safe for a cis passing trans undergrad student to pursue Black Greek life if the only way in is to hide who they are?

In this episode of The Z Spot, Lee Dyer talks about the risks of cis‑passing privilege for trans students who go out for Black Greek orgs without disclosing. He names the danger of being “found out” during the process or after crossing, when line brothers or sisters realize you are not who they assumed — and how quickly that can turn into threat, isolation, or harm for a young person who just wanted community. For Lee, this was the reality check: we are talking about kids, navigating identity, secrecy, and safety in spaces that claim to be about brotherhood and sisterhood.

I’m sitting down with two people of trans experience who share their journeys through Divine 9 Black Greek life…from pledging a sorority, to navigating identity, belonging, brotherhood and sisterhood, and how their relationships with their organizations have shifted over time. They open up about what it felt like to join, what changed along the way, and where they stand with their letters today.
