The question a media candidate asks tells you a lot.

A technician waits to be told what to do. A producer wants to know the goal before touching a camera.

If your church is hiring a media leader, this is one of the first things I’d look for.

I talk more about it on the new episode of The Producer’s Seat 🎧 Link in bio.

Heading to Augusta, GA to spend the weekend with a church media team.

Your next hire might already be on camera 3 this Sunday. I just wrote about it.

Your next media hire will shape your church for years. Hire a leader, not just a technician.

I picked up my first camera at 15 years old. Today at 1pm at CFX 2026 I’m sharing what 37 years in this industry taught me about the one shift that changes everything.

It’s called Think Like a Producer and it’s the most personal talk I’ve ever given. About the moment I stopped thinking like a technician and started thinking like a producer. And how that one shift took me from camera op to Hollywood and most recently to producing 20 episodes of a new series for Paramount for showrunner Taylor Sheridan.

If you’re at CFX meet me at 1pm. I’d love to see you there.

Headed to Birmingham for CFX!

Looking forward to connecting with church media leaders from around the country. If you’re there, I’d love to meet you!

And join me Wednesday at 1 PM for my session. Hope to see you there! by @drwmediaworks

It’s not often I get to drive to a work site for a shoot—usually I’m hopping on an airplane to get to a job site or meeting—but today I made the drive up to Lake Tahoe. What a beautiful drive, and scenery along the way. God sure made some amazing scenery out here. by @drwmediaworks

Adapting to remote filmmaking when your production plans fall apart. When war broke out during my shoot in Jordan and Lebanon, I had to completely pivot my strategy to save the project. I share the exact process of hiring a local filmmaker in Beirut to capture the footage I couldn’t reach myself.

I landed in London for a documentary shoot. My Director of Photography didn’t make it. I overnighted at the airport, picked him up the next day, pushed every interview, and we got it all done without extending the trip. That only worked because I already had a plan before I needed one. That’s pre-production. Every decision you make early is a problem you avoid later. 🎙️ Full episode — link in bio.

25 years producing, and it was all in my head. Budgets, timelines, systems... but never all in one place. Until today. A church media leader called himself a 'video janitor.' That hit hard. You're not just cleaning messes. God wired you to reach people through media. Remember your calling. The link to the Producer seat podcast is in my bio, check it out #ChurchMedia #MediaMinistry #GodsCalling #VideoProduction #CRTV by @drwmediaworks

Two things a church media director told me recently.

"It's easy to hide behind the tech and never get involved in people's lives."

And —

"Sometimes we're made to feel like a video janitor."

Both of those are real.

You were not put in this role to hide.

And you were not put there to just clean up messes.

You were put there because God wired you — specifically — to reach people through media.

That's not a support role.

That's a calling.

Most church media leaders are carrying at least one belief about their role that is working against them.

It sounds like the truth.
It feels justified.
And it is costing you more than you realize.
