Today is my birthday, and without question the defining moment of my last year (and really my whole life) was getting to drive a Bugatti Veyron for the first time. It was simply divine, an experience beyond words, one I’ll remember for the rest of my years.

This is the most superlative car of all time, and it left me a stuttering mess. Even now, months later, having had much time to digest and gush about the drive to others, it’s still hard to describe what it was like beyond just exclaiming “it was perfect.” But I did my best to try. The new @lucasmuseum has the greatest collection of vehicular art I’ve ever seen. Yes, all of the full-size speeders, screen-used scale models and concept art from Star Wars is fantastic to see up close and in person. But in nearly every other themed gallery there are vehicles being used to tell a story in a piece of art — cars, boats, planes, trains and spaceships, featured in oil paintings, watercolors, manga pages and comic book cover proofs. And the vehicular stuff is just a small section of the amazing art in the collection. Gazing upon the original copy of one of the best The Far Side comics ever is worth the price of admission alone.

Laguna Seca might seem like the last place Bentley would host a first-drive event, but it was a great match for the new Supersports, its lightest car in 85 years and the first rear-drive Continental GT. A track-focused Bentley is a ridiculous contradiction, yes, and it totally works. It’s got a real personality, fun and easy to drive fast on track while still maintaining all that Bentley luxury and usability. And I think it looks sick as hell, especially in the ombré Dragon livery. My review is live on @jalopnik now!

One of the most memorable, intimidating sounds in all of movie history are the drum beats in Jumanji that draw in unsuspecting children to discover the board game and start playing. Sitting in a camouflaged Bentley Torcal prototype, the SUV emits a similarly ominous and enticing thump-thump-thump-thump sound as it “idles” in the valet lot.

The Torcal’s sound does teleport Bentley into a new game of sorts. It’s the first electric Bentley and its entry into a new market segment, plus the first car to wear its new design language, among other firsts. And that literally is the beat of a drum, as the Torcal’s noises were created with the help of a real-life orchestra.

Instead of just imitating the V8 sound of a combustion-engine car, Bentley’s engineers wanted to recreate the feelings those V8s give you in the way its sound rumbles and burbles and builds to a crescendo, and that attitude extends to the rest of the car. The Torcal has to feel like a Bentley, in all the right tangible ways. After a forty-minute passenger ride around Monterey, it seems well on its way to delivering. The undisputed stars of the @pebblebeachconcours were the three Alfa Romeo BAT concepts, displayed publicly for the first time since 2020 when they sold for $14 million at a contemporary art auction. And what pieces of art these Berlina Aerodynamica Tecnicas are.

Bertone presented the BAT 5 (grey), BAT 7 (blue), and BAT 9 (silver) at consecutive Turin Auto Shows from 1953 to 1955, and seventy-plus years on they still look like spaceships that touched down on the golf course. They were at Pebble Beach in 1989 after having been reunited and restored in the same collection, and the last time they were shown at the Concours was in 2005, so the crowds around them were constantly buzzing.

I thought I may have seen these cars in person as a young kid, but it was my brain being influenced by decades of seeing the BATs in all the car design history books on my shelf (which I still have all of) and across the internet. Actually seeing them in person, with the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, was just fantastic.
