The David Geffen Galleries at LACMA took 12 years from concept to completion, and I think the result is an absolute stunner. It’s unapologetically brutalist, yet it never feels heavy. The sweeping curves keep unfolding, inviting you to wander without really knowing where you’re going. The raw concrete stays quiet, giving every work of art the space to speak for itself. Then there are the floor to ceiling windows floating above Mid Wilshire, framing Los Angeles like another installation. On one side you can see the La Brea Tar Pits. On the other, the iconic SAG building.. As the daylight shifts across the concrete, the city, the architecture, and the art all start to feel like one experience. taken in LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art by @dskylerestates

Had the pleasure of touring Case Study House No. 16 by Craig Ellwood, his only surviving case study.

Influenced by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, this steel and glass design helped define postwar American residential architecture.

Now listed at $4,875,000 by @midmodern_la taken in Bel Air by @dskylerestates

“A house of glass perched up upon a scenic bluff overlooking the ocean. The quintessential California home.” by Richard Neutra. Perfection.

This is one of those houses I never forget. Every time I think about great Mid-Century Modern, this one comes to mind.

The Sheats Goldstein Residence by John Lautner was built between 1961 and 1963 and carved directly into the hillside above Benedict Canyon. Concrete, glass, and wood work as a single system. Over 750 glass skylights define the ceiling. The living room opens completely to the outdoors with no doors. The architecture grows from the land itself. Later refined for decades with owner James Goldstein, the original vision stayed intact. This is organic modernism at its highest level and one of the most important MCM homes in Los Angeles.
