We might not be alone in the universe 🌌
But if there’s life out there, it might not be on a planet that orbits a star like our Sun.

Over 70% of stars in our galaxy are red dwarfs. They’re smaller and cooler than our Sun, but they host rocky exoplanets – planets beyond our Solar System – some similar in size to Earth 🌍

That’s exactly where Prune Camille August, a recent PhD graduate in Astrophysics from DTU Space, is looking.

The catch? Red dwarfs are unpredictable.

They flare constantly and blast out extreme radiation. And because their habitable zones are much closer to the star, any planet warm enough to support liquid water ends up tidally locked: one side in permanent light and heat, while the other remains in freezing darkness 🌗

So can these planets hold on to an atmosphere? That’s the central question Prune is investigating using @nasa’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) 🔭

By measuring the dayside temperature of rocky exoplanets, researchers can investigate whether an atmosphere is redistributing heat across the planet - or whether the planet is just a bare rock baking in starlight.

Prune was awarded 39 hours of JWST observation time as a PhD student to do exactly that, competing with thousands of proposals from researchers around the world.

If rocky exoplanets around red dwarfs can sustain atmospheres, it could tell us a lot about where potentially habitable environments might exist beyond our Solar System.

How can universities help strengthen democracy? 💬

Last week, DTU President Anders Bjarklev and Chair of the Board Margrethe @Vestager, addressed this question at DTU’s annual Education and Research Policy Summit.

Their message reflects DTU’s new strategy, For the benefit of society - since 1829, which highlights scientific leadership and democratic responsibility:
Researchers must share their knowledge, engage in public debate and help shape informed political decisions – knowing that DTU stands behind them.

Thank you to everyone who joined DTU’s Education and Research Policy Summit 2026 last Tuesday, and contributed with great questions and discussions 👏

CAN WE PRINT CONCRETE WALLS ON THE MOON? 🌕
In 2023, NASA announced plans to build on the Moon by 2040. Pablo Alberdi Pagola was a PhD student at DTU at the time, and a former construction site manager.

The logic seemed straightforward: If we’re going to build autonomously up there, we need to start down here.
A year later, ERLEtek was founded.

The problem on Earth is already pressing 🏗️ Europe will need roughly two million more construction workers by 2030, while the construction industry faces an ageing workforce and growing demand for renovation and climate adaptation.

ERLEtek’s autonomous robot prints walls directly on site, using a vibration-based process that works with both concrete and clay-based mixes 🤖

Right now, the focus is on flood protection walls, retaining walls, and coastal infrastructure. The startup’s first commercial project - a 100-metre coastal floodwall - is planned for 2027.

BUT THE BIGGER VISION IS A SWARM 🐝
Multiple robots printing different sections of a structure at the same time, coordinating so they don’t get in each other’s way. The name reflects that. ERLE means ‘bee’ in Basque, where Pablo is from.

And they’re shooting for the Moon 🚀

ERLEtek, co-founded by Pablo alongside Jonathan Mikler and Lasse Olsen, is part of the European Space Agency’s Business Incubation Centre in Denmark and has been testing its printing process on regolith-like material, the loose rock and dust covering the lunar surface.

For now, they’re building and testing at @dtuskylab’s Developer Hall.

DTU IS #110 IN THE WORLD 👏
DTU has moved up 11 places in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 and is now ranked 110th out of 2,297 universities.

This is DTU’s best ranking since the list was first published in 2010.

DTU has also moved up in Europe and the Nordic region, and is now ranked 39th in Europe and 6th in the Nordics.

DTU has improved on the indicators related to education, teaching and the research environment.

“This is a strong recognition of the quality of our research and education. In our new strategy, we have a clear ambition for DTU to be among Europe’s leading technical universities, and this ranking shows that we are moving in that direction,” says DTU President Anders Bjarklev.

Congratulations to all of us 🎉

“The aim is a hybrid cheese that has the same taste and characteristics as salad cheese, but my personal dream is a cheese that can rival a Camembert,” says Blandine Genet.

In her PhD research, Blandine is working on a hybrid cheese made from milk, rapeseed oil and pea protein – to create a more climate-friendly alternative to conventional cheese without compromising on taste and nutrition 🧀🌍

The current recipe contains 30% pea protein, while the rest comes from milk protein (casein). Rapeseed oil replaces some of the fat to help achieve the classic texture we associate with cheese.

For Blandine, doing a PhD also means taking ownership of the research and finding her own way forward.

“As a new employee, I was surprised by realizing that now I’m the one calling the shots. It’s my project, and I’m the one the students turn to for advice. It’s both daunting and overwhelming, but also really motivating. I feel I’ve found my place.”

SALT + ELECTRICITY = CLEAN WATER💧
Here’s how a DTU startup is using that simple combination to tackle one of the world’s biggest health challenges, starting in India.

Across India, drinking water in homes often comes from rooftop tanks. These tanks sit in the heat, and are often partially open – creating ideal conditions for bacteria to grow 🦠

During a field visit to Delhi, one test user even told the team about monkeys getting into his tank and bathing in it 🐒

Andreas Sixten Hallstein Rygaard and Viktor Ryle Tamstorf founded Njord Aqua after studying at DTU, and the company is now based at @dtuskylab

They’ve been friends since their first day of primary school in Birkerød. For the past few years, they’ve been working to find a solution to the tank problem.

Their solution is a small device that sits in the water. Using a small amount of electricity, it converts naturally occurring salt in the water into chlorine, which dissolves and disinfects the entire tank ⚡️

A sensor monitors the water and automatically adjusts the dose. The device uses as much power as an A4 solar cell or a phone charger and can clean up to 1,000 litres in an hour. Once installed, it can run for years without anyone touching it.

And the number of people who could potentially benefit from a solution like this? In their own words, it’s simply impossible to comprehend.

“People who join have pretty much two things in common: They like rockets and aerospace, and they like asking questions” 🚀✨

That’s how Thomas, a member of @danstardtu, describes one of DTU’s Blue Dot Projects.

At DanSTAR, more than 30 students are working towards one shared mission: to build the rocket that flies the highest. Right now, that’s the nearly 4-meter-tall rocket, Project Parhelion.

MAJOR MILESTONE ACHIEVED 💥
To reach their goal, the team has just completed a crucial hot-fire test of their rocket engine, giving them valuable data on its performance and how to regulate its thrust. Now, they’re preparing for the upcoming static-fire tests.

And rocket science is for everyone. As DanSTAR member, Veronica puts it.

“No one should be intimidated. If you are ready to do research and are willing to work with us, feel free to apply,” she says.

Some things get harder to understand the closer you look 🔬

At the scale Maria Farinha and her colleagues work with at DTU Nanolab, you could write Moby Dick around 650 times on a single grain of rice.

That’s how small the structures are that end up in the microphone in your phone, hearing aids, medical sensors, solar cells, and the chips that will one day power quantum computers ⚛️

Almost anything that senses, computes or communicates in the modern world has been through a cleanroom at some point.

AND THE CLEANROOM ITSELF IS AN EXTREME ENVIRONMENT

Every hour, the air is filtered and replaced 200 times, keeping the room around 8,000 times cleaner than a normal room.

The floors are anti-static, and in some areas the light is yellow because the materials being worked with react to blue and UV light.

It takes special training before you’re allowed to work in there on your own – and a full suit, hood and mask are essential - mostly because one of the biggest sources of dust in a cleanroom comes from us.

But building these tiny structures is only half the process. Once they’re made, they need to be inspected to see whether they turned out as designed. That’s where the characterization team comes in 🔍

They run the electron microscopes at DTU Nanolab, some of the most powerful in the country. Their instruments can resolve individual atoms – meaning you can literally see how a nanostructure is put together, atom by atom.

WELCOME TO TUH SKYLAB
At @rigshospitalet_ in Copenhagen, you can find TUH Skylab, a physical makerspace that brings together engineers, clinicians and students to develop new technological solutions for healthcare.

DTU President Anders Bjarklev and CEO of Rigshospitalet Rasmus Møgelvang recently visited TUH Skylab to meet some of the students using the space and talk about why bringing engineering and medical science closer together matters 🤝

The goal is simple: to make the journey from a clinical need or a good idea to a new solution as short as possible – creating technology that can benefit patients, the healthcare system and society.

And as Rasmus Møgelvang puts it: “I’m quite certain it will come from here” 💡

TUH Skylab is part of TUH – Technical University Hospital of Greater Copenhagen, a partnership between DTU, the Capital Region of Denmark, and Region Zealand.
