TONIGHT: ELLIOTT SHARP TWO-DAY RESIDENCY W/ THE CLINAMEN + DUBMORPHOLOGY + POULOMI DESAI

Two rare UK performances from Elliott Sharp, whose work has sat at the centre of New York’s experimental music scene for more than forty years, spanning noise, no wave, jazz, blues, electronics, opera, orchestral writing and systems-based composition. Across two nights at OTO, Sharp appears with The Clinamen, solo with a reading from his writing, and in a new quartet with Dubmorphology and Poulomi Desai.

TUE 29 SEP
ELLIOTT SHARP WITH DUBMORPHOLOGY + POULOMI DESAI

The second night is a new quartet built around feedback systems, science fiction, algorithmic composition and DIY instruments.

Trevor Mathison and Gary Stewart’s Dubmorphology emerged from their work with the Black Audio Film Collective, developing a Black Industrial practice across fractured montage, dub, musique concrète, field recording and live cinema.

Poulomi Desai joins on augmented sitar, cassette decks, circuit-bent toys, optokinetic instruments, kitchen knives and massage tools, deliberately breaking with ideas of authenticity around the sitar.

⚡️Special event this Wednesday
We are delighted to welcome artist Ângela Ferreira @angela_ferreira__ to The Showroom to discuss her new commission ‘Slits Are Girls’ with curator Andrew Renton @andrew.renton

Together they will explore how the exhibition brings into dialogue two distinct yet resonant histories of punk: the early emergence of The Slits in West London and the anti-apartheid resistance embodied by National Wake in late-1970s South Africa.

Going live today: new intervention by Black Industrial Research Group as part of Ângela Ferreira’s exhibition: ‘Slits are Girls’

Thursday 9 April, 12pm onwards

As part of Ângela Ferreira’s commitment to sustaining the ‘Slits are Girls’ installation as an open, working space, the artist has invited the Black Industrial Research Group to intervene throughout the exhibition. Building on Dubmorphology’s opening performance in February, the Research Group have developed an evolving intervention that draws on punk and its entanglements with multiple political and cultural histories. This expanded field of research and critique montages sound and visual elements, projected onto one of the sculptural forms within the installation. This ongoing, generative, and semi-autonomous system is intended as a non-conforming, punk montage machine that suggests connections between artistic and political projects in the UK and South Africa.

The exhibition continues until 7 June
Open Wednesday – Saturdays, 12–6pm

𝕆𝕤𝕔𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 ℂ𝕒𝕣𝕠𝕦𝕤𝕖𝕝 ::: 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕆𝕣𝕓𝕚𝕥

A dialogue between analogue sculptures and electronic algorithms, two playable large-scale hydraulic sound sculptures, a Brussels canal zone site-specific durational set, acousmatic Afro-descendant memory in Europe, pioneering Gnaoua music, acoustic DIY sound objects, Afrofuturism Film Night, bray harp possibilities :::

01.05, Limpe Fuchs & Mark Fell @ Bodeek: Coming from seemingly incompatible traditions, exploring temporal instability through sustained improvisation, where music becomes a continuous negotiation of time as an audible and unstable process.

26.04, Vica Pacheco & Loto Retina @ MDC Modelwijk: A live duet for two large-scale hydraulic sound sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian whistling vessels creating a continuous, mirrored yet never identical dialogue.

03.05, Dubmorphology (Trevor Mathison & Gary Stewart) @ BUDA BXL: A durational performance using environmental sonics from geophone, hydrophone, and contact mics alongside synthesis and archival voices to explore encounters between language, identity, and systemic power.

28/04, Laryssa Kim/Michèle Bokanowski @ Rosas Performance Space: Mfinda explores Afro-descendant memory in Europe through Congolese sound archives that surface in flashes within a broader sonic tableau, bridging electroacoustic writing, archives, and rhythm to celebrate transmission, ancestry, healing, and rebirth. Kim will also spatialize Bokanowski’s Rhapsodia.

26/04, Imane Guemssy @ Maison de la création Modelwijk: A pioneer and ambassador of Gnaoua music, breaking taboos by blending tradition with modern influences while emphasizing its spirituality.

01/05, Sholto Dobie & Alanas Gurinas @ Bodeek: Self-made instruments and everyday materials in a site-specific approach, autonomous sound objects unfolding through loose structures and subtle transformations.

27/04, Afrofuturism Film Night w/ Africa is/in the Future @ MDC Modelwijk: Screenings of I FELT IT INSIDE OF (ME) by Ange Mukunde and The Last Angel of History by John Akomfrah, introduced by AIITF’s Marie Umuhoza.

02/05, Rhodri Davies @ Bodeek: “Precise, angled brays / Speaking every profound feeling.” by @dubmorphology

'Slits are Girls' is #AngelaFerreira solo show at #Theshowroom which brings one of the few women punk group 'The Slits' back through the lens of punk in South African. Ângela Ferreira never stops surprising us, here she brings another understanding of this movement against everything and firstly against apartheid. This was 50 Years ago and injustice still remains, be it at the level of social justice or Gender. A show nicely curated by #Andrew Renton.
A surprisingly way of revisiting the punk movement which also started around the corner of this iconic exhibition space.

Bantu @ Hundred Years Gallery, 13 Pearson St, E2 8JD
Saturday 7th February 19:30

A rare outing in the UK as Bantu the alter ego of Gary Stewart at the Hundred Years Gallery art Space in Hoxton which also features sets from Xuanni and Dhangsha.

I have been having some fun prepping for this audio visual performance exploring some militant but soulful Nyabingi drum patterns to see how I might create and sculpt new rhythm and textures that reflects my political, spiritual, and cultural influences.

At the heart of this performance will be my Electron Octarack performance sampler and Strega electronic synth from Make Noise which they describe as an audio alchemical experiment. I should have enough time to get some audio reactive visuals running through Resolume. Let's see how it goes as usual it will all be improvised live.

Please come along. It would be great to see you there.

@dhangsha_music (Bengali for ‘destruction’) is the project and alias of electronic artist Aniruddha Das. Working at the interface of bass culture and experimental noise, he explores minimalism, repetition and fragmentation, instigating turbulent interactions between metered rhythm and abstract noise.

@Xuanni_space (aka Space) is a Chinese composer, improviser, and noise artist based in London. Her practice moves between acoustic instruments, electronics, and found objects, focusing on process, physical interaction, and real-time response.
