We never planned to own a farm. But sometimes life has other ideas.

This is Dufflebird Farm, a property in Berrys Creek, South Gippsland, just a few kilometres from where my family have farmed for over a century.

My great-grandfather arrived from Scotland in 1886, bought land in this same valley, and planted roots that held through four generations.

I grew up down the road. Spent my teenage years desperate to leave for Melbourne, to travel, to build a big life somewhere else. And I did.

What I didn’t expect was the quiet ache of realising, decades later, what I’d left behind.

When Mum died in 2023, we started renovating her place to sell. It felt like the practical thing to do. But something happened in those months of driving down and back from Anglesea, of stripping floors and salvaging doors from Ballarat and slowly bringing neglected spaces back to life.

We started to fall in love with it. With the place, with the work, with the particular quiet that only exists this far from a city.

By the time we were ready to sell, the market had taken a downturn. As it turned out, the only people we’d managed to convince of this farm’s potential were ourselves. No one bought it, so we did instead.

Wide open sky. Crystal clear stars. The view all the way down to the river and the Gippsland hills beyond. A house full of things with stories.

And so we have opened the gates to anyone who needs reminding what slow and simple and space feels like.

At the rate we’re falling back in love with this place, it wouldn’t surprise me if we resettle here once the kids finish school, which would make them the fifth generation of our family to call Berrys Creek home..

My great-grandfather crossed an ocean to find his piece of paradise. I pranced around the world a bit looking for mine and might just end up back where I started.

Dusk at the farm.

120 acres down a quiet lane in South Gippsland, two hours from Melbourne.

Open paddocks, a lot of sky, and not much else to hear.

The fire. The bathhouse. The cow moving slowly from one paddock to the next.

When your guests casually mention they got engaged during their recent stay, and you watch the video on repeat like it’s your own family.

How absolutely gorgeous, and how good is the timing. Early spring, green, lush, and everything coming to life at once.

It’s no small thing, being the place they chose for a moment they’ll remember forever.

Thank you, and huge congratulations, we’re so delighted to have been the backdrop for it.

THE BATHHOUSE AT DUFFLEBIRD FARM

Formerly a chicken shed. Now light-filled and a short walk from the house.

The 9 Darling St-esque doors are a Facebook Marketplace find, old bank doors from Ballarat.

The bi-fold French doors, which open straight onto the paddock, came from @renovatorsparadise.

The arched colonial window, also found in Ballarat.

A note on the bath: it’s a standard single-person bath. Designed for a slow, solo soak with a view.

The property runs entirely on collected rainwater.

When your caretaker asks if the clean and reset can wait, because there are no guests arriving for 24 hours and there is a lambing ewe that could do with a helping hand -well, of course.

These country women are something else entirely.

Carolyn is the steady pair of hands behind many of the beautiful details at Dufflebird Farm.

The fresh foliage on the table, the perfectly styled rooms and the little touches that make a stay feel special and considered.

But that's only part of the story.

Before farm life, Carolyn worked in design and as a university lecturer, developing an eye for detail, creativity and visual storytelling.

She's created beautiful spaces through floristry, styling and event management, and has a gift for making people feel welcome wherever they are.

These days, her world stretches far beyond beautifully prepared guest rooms.

On any given day she may be lambing ewes, tending animals, styling spaces or organising events. @hazeleigh_blooms

The photos here were taken on Carolyn's own farm, and ofter a little glimpse into the rich and creative lite she returns to when Dufflebird Farm is sparkling clean and ready for its next guests.

A reminder that behind every stay is a real person with a story, a passion, and a life woven deeply into this corner of Gippsland.
