A house is not a hotel room.

From 20 November 2026, Airbnb hosts can no longer ask guests to wash their dishes.

It sounds like a small rule change. But it raises a bigger question: is Airbnb so determined to standardise the experience that it’s losing what made it special?

A holiday house isn’t a hotel room with a kitchen thrown in.

It’s a home, with a properly equipped kitchen, countless appliances, often several bathrooms, decks, a garden and room for the family (and the dog) to gather. It has a thousand moving parts.

It’s not a 25-square-metre box with an iron, a kettle and a hairdryer.

Our properties take four to six hours to reset between guests. Asking guests to wash their dishes doesn’t replace housekeeping. It’s basic courtesy towards the people who make their stay possible.

Holiday homes were rented for generations before Airbnb came along. That courtesy came with them.

Of course, some hosts have gone too far with chore lists. But there’s a difference between unreasonable demands and common courtesy.

The real cost isn’t a few dirty dishes. It’s what happens when we lower the bar for hospitality.

More cleaning hours. Earlier checkouts. Higher rates. Beautifully equipped kitchens stripped back to the bare essentials. And the guests who already treat a place with care end up paying for those who don’t.

Airbnb grew because it offered something hotels couldn’t: a more personal, human way to travel. You stayed in someone’s home, cooked in their kitchen, read their books and lived like a local.

If the platform increasingly wants to behave like a hotel business, perhaps hosts need to reconsider where they invest their energy.

Are we building something distinctive, or competing to become interchangeable?

Change is inevitable and yes it’s happening fast. But, losing sight of what made the experience special is optional.

We didn’t get into this to be transactional and neither did our exceptional team. And a race to the bottom isn’t a strategy any of us are interested in.

It’s far more rewarding to stay generous. On both sides.

Squeaky Beach at Wilsons Prom.

The water is turquoise, there are islands offshore, and the sand squeaks when you walk on it. It topped a list of Australian beaches a couple of years back.

From Liptrap Loft it’s about 40 minutes to the park entrance at Yanakie and an hour to Tidal River.

From Tidal River, walk the coastal track north over the headland, about 45 minutes each way. If you’d rather not walk, the Squeaky Beach car park is just before Tidal River, a short stroll from the sand.

Hard to forget. Not for swimming, the rips are strong.

We love creating the beautiful imagery that brings the world of Plume to life, but our first year has comprised more than just the finished picture.

Theres been nerves, first samples & a lot of late nights. So, looking back at our first year, we’re reflecting on some of the raw moments too.

The constant presence in all of it has been the community we have found here. So whether you’re new to Plume or have been here since before we set foot in France, we want you to know that your encouragement, support and belief in us is appreciated beyond measure.

We’re just two best friends going after our dreams. We can’t wait to continue growing Plume with you all. We love our collectors <3

Just got notified that Dufflebird Farm is now in Airbnb's top 1%.

Honestly didn't even know it went beyond top 5–10%, or that there was a top 1% metric and acknowledgment.

It looks like the ranking weighs you against the world, but also against similar homes in your own region, so local nuances get factored in too.

Thank you to our amazing team for going above and beyond, and for the reported exceptional cleanliness, consistency and reliability.

It's been such a fun project, and we're so delighted it's landing so well with our visitors and guests.

A huge thank you to the incredible people who've helped us along the journey.

I hit publish on the update to our Dufflebird website this week.

Before every link worked. Before we'd finished the last 10%, the part that somehow always takes as long as the other 90%.

I hit publish by accident. Terror followed immediately. But seeing it live, imperfect and all, did something useful. It made us hone in and start finishing it properly.

Still tweaking a few things, but it's close. Live before I was.

One thing I'd like to get right: properly crediting the photographers whose work appears across the homepage.

What they captured says more about these places than any of our words ever will.

Where we didn't already have something in place around licensing and permission, I reached out. What came back, every time, was such gratitude for asking. Which made me ponder how difficult this whole area must be for creatives and talent generally.

I've added a link in the footer that leads through to a page of credits, each photographer's name, their own site, their own work.

What's the best way you've seen this done?

Thank you, genuinely, to all the talent behind these images.
