Applicants at the Divinity School automatically receive information about scholarships through the admissions process and all admitted students are automatically considered for internal Duke Divinity scholarship support.

Through the generosity of many, Duke Divinity School is able to offer even more support through the Annual Fund, special fellowships, and established endowments.

What happens when you worship in a language you don’t fully understand?

For Duke Divinity students Grace deMaine and Jia Cummings, it meant learning to listen differently.

This summer, they became the first Duke Divinity students to participate in an international field education placement in South Korea, spending 10 weeks at Good Shepherd Korean Methodist Church.

deMaine learned the power of presence and observation. Cummings found a community that showed her that "[loving] Christ together transcends cultural boundaries and language barriers.”

Their experience offered both students a broader imagination for what ministry can look like and a deeper connection to the global church.

For Aaron Shirley, M.Div. ’27, field education at Open Table Ministry in Durham is helping him think differently about what it means to see the whole person as he prepares for a career in medicine.

At Open Table, Shirley has learned that care can mean listening to someone’s story, honoring their agency, and being willing to stay with a problem longer than the system expects.

“I think that to be healthy is to be whole and in community,” he said.

His experience is shaping how he hopes to enter a medical room someday: not simply seeing a diagnosis, but seeing the person in front of him.

What does it mean to recognize God’s presence in the wilderness?

During Hispanic Heritage Month, the Duke Divinity School community gathered in Goodson Chapel for a worship service hosted by the Hispanic House of Studies.

Doctoral candidate Isaac Villegas preached from Exodus 17, reflecting on the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness and their question: “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Villegas reminded the community that liberation does not mean the end of struggle. “After liberation, there’s the desert,” he said. "In the wilderness, God’s people are called to care for one another, attend to one another’s needs, and organize for the health of the whole community."

His sermon invited us to recognize God’s presence, even in the wilderness, and to respond to one another’s needs with care, provision, and accompaniment.

¿Qué significa reconocer la presencia de Dios en el desierto?

Durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, la comunidad de la Escuela de Divinidad de Duke se reunió en la Capilla Goodson para un servicio de adoración organizado por la Casa de Estudios Hispanos.

El candidato doctoral Isaac Villegas predicó sobre Éxodo 17, reflexionando sobre la jornada de los israelitas a través del desierto y sobre su pregunta: “¿Está o no está el Señor entre nosotros?”

Villegas le recordó a la comunidad que la liberación no significa el fin de la lucha. “Luego de la liberación, está el desierto”, compartió.
