A living lab for conservation and sustainability. šŸ¦… šŸ’š

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
H72’s schedule on April 6:

— leave nest briefly
— get weighed
— get measured
— get bands
— return home
— inspect new accessories
— have fish for dinner
— snuggle with mom

A very big day for this calm king at the Duke Farms Bald Eagle nest.

Banding helps researchers track individual birds and better understand their health, movement, and survival over time. This one took the whole experience in stride.

A dinner rooted in place, season, and the systems that bring food to the table. [Sponsored]

On Friday, November 13, join Duke Farms for Rooted at Duke Farms: A Dinner by Chef Lauren Owens, an intimate evening exploring the connections between food, land, growers, and conservation.

Chef Lauren’s seasonal menu will guide the evening, with stories woven throughout from the people connected to the ingredients, the land, and the regional food system behind the meal.

And the evening is only the beginning: each ticket includes a one-year Duke Farms membership, welcoming guests into the Duke Farms community and extending the connection beyond the dinner.

Friday, November 13 | 6–9 PM
Duke Farms | Hillsborough, NJ

Here's what you missed! On October 1st, we led a Duke Farms After Dark: Member Exclusive event where we dissected owl pellets, played bingo with the bones (happy halloween?) and even heard a Great Horned owlet calling in the Great Meadow! šŸ¦‰ by @dukefarms

Fall at Duke Farms?* Yes please.Ā
Ā
While summer may get all of the glory when it comes to wildflowers, the fall has a lot to offer. Get out there and enjoy the native plants that serve as late season nectar sources for migrating species like the Monarch butterfly.
Ā
Swipe to find our Native Plant bingo board to use while walking through Duke Farms. Bonus points for spotting Monarchs!

As NY Climate Week comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the people and partnerships that make progress possible here at home.

New Jersey is full of people doing serious work for climate. This evening was about bringing more of them into the same room.

Ahead of Climate Week NYC, @dukefarms, a center of the @dorisdukefdn convened leaders across government, conservation, clean energy, environmental justice, research, philanthropy, business, culture, and community for conversation, connection, and a little more shared momentum.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to @nj.dep Commissioner Ed Potosnak and Duke Farms Executive Director Margaret Waldock for helping set the tone for the evening. #treehouse #dukefarms #climateweek #njclimateweek taken in Duke Farms by @dukefarms

These cows have a job.

At Duke Farms, rotational grazing is part of how we manage grasslands for both climate and biodiversity. Moving cattle through pastures in a planned way can help maintain habitat for ground-nesting birds, support healthier soils, and contribute to carbon storage belowground.

It’s also research in action. By studying what happens on the land, we can generate data that farmers and land stewards can use to make better decisions in their own landscapes.

Cows, birds, soil, science—one system, working together.

What if a wastewater treatment system looked more like a wetland?

At Duke Farms, constructed wetlands help treat wastewater through a series of natural processes—using plants, soils, and microorganisms to do work that a conventional septic system would otherwise handle.

It’s infrastructure designed to work with nature, not apart from it.

And that’s part of what makes Duke Farms a living lab: testing practical ways to rethink how a campus handles the systems we usually don’t see.

Wildlife doesn’t exactly RSVP.

That’s where cameras come in.

By capturing what happens when people aren’t around, wildlife cameras can help researchers understand which animals are moving through a habitat, when they’re active, and how they’re using the landscape.

It’s one more way we turn observation into better stewardship.

Behind the scenes at @dukefarms

Loved filming these passionate scientists and seeing firsthand how much they care about their work in environmental science, conservation, and sustainability.

Their passion and dedication made this story special. Proud to help bring their work to a wider audience through enegvisuals.

A handful of soil can tell you a lot about a landscape.

Sampling helps us understand what’s happening below the surface—information that can shape how we restore and manage land over time.

It’s not the flashiest part of conservation work. But good decisions start with knowing what’s actually happening beneath our feet.

What can a landscape tell us when we stop and listen?

Bioacoustic recorders help researchers detect the sounds of wildlife across Duke Farms—giving us another way to understand which species are here and how those communities may change over time.

Sometimes conservation starts with doing less talking and a little more listening.
