POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Real food system change happens when we work together across silos.

We recently gathered regional nonprofit leaders, farmers, researchers, and advocates for our Fall Roundtable to explore innovative strategies for building resilient local food systems.

Here are a few inspiring takeaways from our keynote and panel, moderated by Wolfe’s Neck Center’s Ellen Griswold:

Xochitl Torres Small (@quiviracoalition): Shared that the farmer's share of the food dollar has dropped from 40¢ to just 6¢ since the 1970s, underscoring the urgent need for connectors across silos to build a fairer food system. “One of the things that keeps me up at night is: How do we get healthier food that's still affordable, or more affordable than it is now?”

Megan Larmer (@glynwoodorg): Emphasized that building new, sustainable food systems requires making them joyful, beautiful, and attractive to all.

Margaret Waldock (@dukefarms): Discussed how regional farm centers with conserved campuses can take risks and experiment to scale positive outcomes for land managers everywhere.

Lissy Matthews (@dairygrazingalliance): Highlighted the critical role of knowledge transfer from experienced farmers to the next generation to preserve the fabric of rural communities.

Dana Hudson (@shelburnefarms): Reminded us that "small is all"—focusing on sustained, incremental changes creates long-term structural impact.

A Garden of Peace ~ I brought Ruby 🪉 up to the Great Meadow at the Old Foundation…and it started to rain as soon as I started, but that’s ok 🙃

In the Autumn edition of ANJEC REPORT…
COLLABORATING TO CONNECT HABITAT ACROSS NEW JERSEY (p. 4)
By~ Lindsay Brubaker of DUKE FARMS
—> https://www.flipsnack.com/BA66ED99E8C/fall2026-anjecreport

New Jersey is home to a vast array of
for wildlife as well as “corridors” that
unique and ecologically connect them that wildlife must move across to find food, water, shelter and mates in order to maintain healthy populations

Recognizing the challenges wildlife face in an increasingly fragmented landscape, the NJDEP developed the Connecting Habitat Across New Jersey (CHANJ) tools, a map and guidance document to assist the State, townships, nonprofits, counties and individuals with land preservation, restoration and mitigation projects.
The map identifies “core” habitats, which are large contiguous areas (corridors) that connect them.

One of my favorite Fall Spots in NJ is @dukefarms 🍂

Duke Farms is an incredible 2,700-acre environmental center and former estate located in Hillsborough, NJ. If you’re looking to get outside in Central Jersey this Fall definitely add it to your list.

A tobacco tycoon’s 2,700-acre estate is now a free public park in Central New Jersey.

James B. Duke began buying farmland along the Raritan River in 1893 and named it @dukefarms in 1899. He built 9 lakes, waterfalls, and dozens of fountains, plus miles of stone walls.

When he died in 1925, his only child, Doris, inherited it at 12. Her mother wanted to sell. Doris sued and kept it. She lived here until 1993, and her foundation still runs the property.

After a $45 million renovation, Duke Farms opened to the public in 2012.

We went in October. Sycamore-lined paths, fountains, a waterfall, a 1900s greenhouse, and plenty of room for little legs.

Save this for your next #nj fall weekend.

We’ve been busy planning events for you!

🗓️ Though it seems impossible, we’ve begun the bare bones of our 2027 schedule. We cannot wait to continue birding with you into next year.

Take a look at our updated calendar of events (beachybirder.com/schedule) and save the dates for your favorite walks. Registration will open as we get closer to each event. As always, more opportunities will be added on a rolling basis as we create them.

A gentle reminder that birding is for everyone. All are welcome on our friendly and respectful Beachy Birder Adventures.

We also wanted to give you a heads up that given rising operating costs, our walks will be $30/person starting in 2027. If you have any concerns about this increase, please do reach out to us.

Thank you so much as always for your support. We're so grateful for our joyful community, now more than ever. Good Birding! ✨
