Had the fabulous honor of showing my quilt exploring my family’s history working for the MTA at the @nytransitmuseum last week :) 🚊❤️

Before 370 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn was part of NYU’s Brooklyn campus and the home of @itp_nyu, it was the headquarters of the New York Transit Authority, which later became the MTA. During my time as a student at ITP, I learned that my great-aunt Marie, great-uncle Jimmy, and great-grandfather Tony all worked at 370 Jay Street for the Transit Authority in the 1940-60s.

In the weeks and months that followed this discovery, I began researching this connection by spending time with my great-aunt to learn about her experience, and organizing, digitizing, and archiving family photos and documents that she kept at her home. “A Familial Juncture” is an interactive textile record of what I learned, saw, and heard throughout this process.

Thank you to @ikyotochan + @kozanamostu for organizing this collaboration and making it possible, and all of the fabulous people at the Transit Museum for welcoming us in :)

It was so nice to take my quilt out of the box and share it again. Every time I do, I have the most amazing conversations with quilters, people who have similar stories of familial coincidences, or those who just love talking about the MTA. taken in New York Transit Museum by @dullhouze

returned to the world of soft speakers to do a lecture & demo in @ikyotochan ‘s fabulous Soft Robotics class at @itp_nyu :)

every time i teach this workshop, people make speakers in a way i haven’t seen before— either with a type of fabric i haven’t tried, or sewing conductive thread in inventive ways.

something new to get out of my rut — a quick crochet animation! 🐠🐠🐠

i started how i always do with crochet projects… in google sheets ❤️ This part took a surprisingly long amount of time, and it came out more rectangular than expected.

But, after making each frame, blocking and drying, I am really happy with how it came out! Feeling inspired for a future project : ) 🐟 by @dullhouze

TRANSIT TRADING CARD # 2: Ja’Neen, retired train operator!

I met Ja’Neen through Vee, who was on card #1 — they worked together on the G train for a while! Ja’Neen operated the train while Vee was the conductor.

[PS: the operator drives the train and sits at the front, and the conductor is in the middle of the train, making announcements and opening/closing the doors!]

Ja’Neen got her start in Transit as a station cleaner, then a conductor, and then was an operator for 27 years (!!!) on many different lines. She believes definitively that it is not okay to eat on the train!

Amazing illustration by @sarishakurup ✍️✍️✍️

Ja’Neen’s card is available now at @w4newsstand while supplies last! by @dullhouze

TRANSIT TRADING CARD # 1: Vee, Conductor (Retired 2022) 🚂

When @al_mullen_ first showed me his list of ideas for @w4newsstand many months ago, I knew immediately I wanted to take on making trading cards of MTA employees. I put out a call on my Instagram and asked anyone I spoke to if they knew anyone, and got a DM from @aliawarsco saying she was doing jury duty with a retired conductor, and would I want to speak to her?

I got on the phone with Vee a week later and she graciously answered my many many questions about the role of a conductor — hours, routes, highs, lows, and so much more.

Vee is a Brooklyn native who started her Transit career as a Railroad Clerk (now called Station Agents) and after 6 years became a Conductor. She was a conductor on the N, Q, and G train over the course of the next 27 years.

Fabulous illustration done by @sarishakurup, based on an awesome photo of Vee on the train!

I had the pleasure of making labels for the @w4newsstand iconic (is it too early to say that?) borough clocks. Inspired by timezone clocks that usually have places like New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, etc. Even made it in a fabulous piece in the NYT!

When @al_mullen_ first read off to me his giant List of Ideas for the newsstand, this one stood out to me immediately. So simple yet so funny : ) Swing by the newsstand to see the clocks and a whole lot more!!

Much more newsstand content to come!
