COVER REVEAL: Just A Howl by Will Richter (@anotherwillrichter)

Finding humour in desolation and beauty in the absurd, this darkly comic story collection chronicles our struggle for control in an uncontrollable world.

An eruption of violence at a book reading. A doomed infatuation at the dawn of a plague. A married couple finding their carefully balanced lives as lighthouse keepers upended when they rescue a young woman from drowning. An oil executive spiralling into self-doubt as he is slowly swallowed by a snake.

Set in prepper cabins and dentist offices, ivory towers and backwoods cults, these and other stories tell of a Canadian west made new and strange. Equipped with a gallows humour and a keen sense of the loneliness, irrationality, and unexpected cruelties of modern life, Just a Howl explores the many ways the twenty-first century corrodes our every attempt to connect to one another, as all the while a backdrop of catastrophe — personal, societal, and ecological — tilts the comic into the tragic.

NEW RELEASE — Unseen Thing by Christopher Dodd (@christopher_dodd_author)

“A compelling exploration of a family’s dream of country life that evolves into a waking nightmare.“ — @markleslieauthor

Ghostlore, folkloric patterns, and science collide in the tale of the infamous Mulmur Hills poltergeist.

In the aftermath of the Great War, the Dobson family retreats to a quiet farm in Mulmur, Ontario, seeking peace from urban life. Their tranquility is shattered when terrifying horse mutilations signal the presence of an unseen thing. In time, the terror moves indoors, turning the farmhouse into a battleground of inexplicable phenomena: phantom knocks, shaking floors, and objects that defy gravity. When the disturbances take a darker, more violent turn, the Dobsons flee. Their ordeal draws journalists and thrill-seekers to the now-famous “Spook Farm.“

As rumours of family intrigue, buried secrets, and supernatural forces swirl, spiritualist investigator Ivan Hutchins joins the Dobsons to unravel the mystery through séances and first-hand inquiry. The story unfolds against a wider tapestry of rural Canadian poltergeist cases, comparing the Dobsons’ ordeal with other hauntings and the patterns they share.

This forgotten chapter of Canadian paranormal history explores why such occurrences echo throughout our folklore, our fears, and our enduring fascination with the unexplained.

Congratulations to both Madelaine Drohan for He Did Not Conquer and Kathleen Lippa for Arctic Predator on being shortlisted for the 2026 Ottawa Book Awards in the Non-Fiction category!

In He Did Not Conquer, Madelaine Drohan documents extensively Benjamin Franklin’s not-so-secret desire to annex Canada and make it American. Franklin’s elevation to the status of an American icon has pushed this signal failure into the far reaches of collective memory in both Canada and the United States. Yet it shaped the future of North America and relations between the two neighbours over the next two and a half centuries.

In Arctic Predator, journalist Kathleen Lippa, after years of research, examines the devastating impact the crimes of Edward Horne had on individuals, families, and entire communities. Her compelling work lifts the veil of silence surrounding the story once and for all.

NEW RELEASE — Unto the Day by Dayle Furlong (@daylefurlong909)

“Furlong gives voice to those most intimately involved with [George] Brown's story ... Each is given a poignant backstory, fully fleshed out with the full range of human emotion and experience — a visceral reminder that the histories of the famous include a variety of no-less-important secondary characters.” — Booklist

“...a sensitive, finely detailed portrait of an early Canada wracked with the tension of uneasy political union and gaping class, gender, and religious inequities. Unto the Day joins Alias Grace and The Colony of Unrequited Dreams as some of this country's best-researched and most compelling historical fiction.” — Sarah Henstra, author of The Red Word

Life changes dramatically for suffragist Anne Brown after her husband's death.

In the spring of 1880, wealthy politician and Globe editor George Brown was at the height of his career when he was shot by a disgruntled poet who worked in the newspaper's boiler room. Brown left an undeniable legacy as a founder of the modern Liberal Party, fierce abolitionist, industrialist, and preeminent Father of Confederation. Yet he was not without his flaws: Brown infamously disliked the Irish and arrogantly declared that women should not vote.

In this deeply imagined work of historical fiction, narrated through the perspective of characters most impacted by his formidable presence, readers witness the struggle of a motherless Irish domestic in fear and awe of Brown; his wife, Anne, a suffragist who is caught between devotion and defiance of her husband's authority; and the world-weary poet who seethes with resentment, harbouring notions of revenge. Immersive, epic, and emotionally moving, Unto the Day is an intelligent, captivating literary feat.

NEW RELEASE — A Murmuration of Starlings: A Birder Murder Mystery by Steve Burrows (@birdermystery)

“Burrows’ writing improves with every novel, and Jejeune continues to be an exciting, multidimensional, thoroughly engaging series lead.” — Booklist, on the series

In the 10th Birder Murder Mystery, demons from the past await Jejeune down under ...

DCI Domenic Jejeune visits DCS Colleen Shepherd in Australia to discuss his future. Or so he tells his partner, Lindy Hey. But when a murdered man’s body shows up at the exact spot he was abducted from days earlier, Jejeune is drawn into a case involving Lindy's nemesis, Ray Hayes. Now the detective must decide between upholding the law and protecting Lindy from harm.

Back in Norfolk, the murder of the CEO of a lithium battery importer sets Sergeant Danny Maik on a collision course with Jejeune. Any evidence one detective uncovers seems to only undercut the progress of the other.

Set against a backdrop of Australia's current environmental initiatives and echoes of its colonial past, these cases challenge loyalties and long-held beliefs. No one doubts an Aboriginal Elder's prophecy that the situation will ultimately end in tragedy. The question is, will anyone manage to survive the fallout?

🚨 Recently, there’s been an increasing amount of scams impersonating Dundurn Press staff targeting authors and book publishing professionals.

Often these scammers will reach out by email and often their messages may appear genuine. These are typically from email addresses that do not end in [at]dundurn[dot]com — but may have Dundurn in the address or the name of a staff member and/or a photograph pulled from professional networking websites.

Many of these scammers are using AI to appear real and carry out conversations, often using it to create detailed messages that show an interest in creators’ works.

Always keep in mind that Dundurn Press does NOT solicit authors/creators for money.

When in doubt, read carefully for red flags, do not click on links or share personal information, report the message as spam, and delete scam messages without responding.

If you believe you have received a genuine message from us, please make sure it’s coming from a legitimate email address.

We're thrilled to announce that Amaranthine Chevrolet by Dennis E Bolen (@dennis.e.bolen) has been nominated for the Victoria Book Prize! (@victoriabookprizes)

In the year 1967, fifteen-year-old Robin drives an antique pickup truck west from Saskatchewan, travelling across farmland and on unmarked roads to avoid police. Like Odysseus striving toward home, he encounters trying situations: men on the run, hippies creating utopia, marijuana farmers, mechanical breakdowns, a raging forest fire. Robin passes through a massively changing society — a rural culture that, though eroding, hangs on to values of kindness and endurance, and one in which Robin must be both heroic and vulnerable.
