The mystery was okay, but I found a lot of the descriptions and interactions fairly repetitive. Everything seemed to come a little too easily for our main characters and I wasn't invested in them or their case. (Although I admit, this lack of character connection is likely my fault for not having read the previous books in this series. It still works as a standalone, but I would have benefited from reading this in order.)

There are, however, a ton of fantastic reviews for this one so I am fortunately one of the outliers with my thoughts on this book. If you enjoy police procedural style mysteries, this one might be for you!

#TheRiddleMaker is available next month! Thanks to @minotaur_books for my gifted advance copy!

I am only a quarter of the way through this one but I'm loving it so far. With its unique writing style, it's definitely giving four or five star tingles. As a WWII historical fiction fan, this is standing out in the genre! If you enjoy fiction inspired by real events and people, add this to the TBR.

Full review coming soon. Thanks to @simonschusterca for my gifted ARC. #TheBarmanoftheRitz is available now.

A non-fiction read featuring the lives of Canadian women who served on the home front during WWII -- from farmersโ€™ daughters to lawyers, impoverished immigrants to Rosedale elites, and high school students to great-grandmothers. Each narrative is unique, intimately personal, and painstakingly examined.

Huge thanks to @dundurnpress for my gifted advance copy of this one. I can't wait to dive in. #CourageandGrit is available November 17!

๐Ÿš๏ธUnseen Thing: The Mulmur Hills Poltergeist by Christopher Dodd
Pub Date: Sept 29, 2026

Thank you, @dundurnpress and @christopher_dodd_author, for the gifted paperback!

I enjoyed this account of poltergeists in Canadian history put together from old historical data like newspapers and reports. I also liked the reenactment-style portrayal of the events on the Mulmur Hills Spook Farm. It leaves lingering questions as to what really occurred, which is how these things usually go without a dose of Hollywood thrown in to wrap things up in a pretty bow. The objective theorizing and analysis of the events was entertaining. If youโ€™re looking for a poltergeist story leaning closer to nonfiction, youโ€™ll enjoy this book.

Description: Ghostlore, folkloric patterns, and science collide in the tale of the infamous Mulmur Hills poltergeist.

In the aftermath of the Great War, the Dobson family retreats to a quiet farm in Mulmur, Ontario, seeking peace from urban life. Their tranquility is shattered when terrifying horse mutilations signal the presence of an unseen thing. In time, the terror moves indoors, turning the farmhouse into a battleground of inexplicable phantom knocks, shaking floors, and objects that defy gravity. When the disturbances take a darker, more violent turn, the Dobsons flee. Their ordeal draws journalists and thrill-seekers to the now-famous โ€œSpook Farm.โ€

As rumours of family intrigue, buried secrets, and supernatural forces swirl, spiritualist investigator Ivan Hutchins joins the Dobsons to unravel the mystery through seฬances and first-hand inquiry. The story unfolds against a wider tapestry of rural Canadian poltergeist cases, comparing the Dobsonsโ€™ ordeal with other hauntings and the patterns they share.

This forgotten chapter of Canadian paranormal history explores why such occurrences echo throughout our folklore, our fears, and our enduring fascination with the unexplained.
