🎹🔇 In 2024, Terre Thaemlitz began to perform a series of durational, solo piano works. Unlike Thaemlitz’s earlier digital piano concerts, the new works are played on a grand piano; they employ improvisational systems and, occasionally, prepared-piano techniques. The series continues the minimalist, ambient, and neo-Expressionist piano playing that Thaemlitz has developed over the past three decades in various electroacoustic and house albums.

The first performance of Thaemlitz’s new series took place in June 2024, as a conclusion to Trajal Harrell’s five-year stint as resident choreographer at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. Harrell gave the final performance of her acclaimed choreography for Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert, followed by what was lightheartedly billed as Thaemlitz’s “Zürich Concert.”

Thaemlitz’s performances are not recorded, streamed, or archived, in keeping with a longstanding no-recording policy, which is rooted in a rejection of today’s homogenizing archive industries. This policy began in the early 2010s, in reaction to sudden federal and corporate financial interests in building LGBT archives, which went against Thaemlitz’s own strategies of the closet, invisibility, secrecy, withholding, and remaining culturally minor.

On November 15, Thaemlitz’s piano performance will be followed by a conversation with Triple Canopy contributing editor Ciarán Finalyson. This program is presented in collaboration with Public Records’s Durations festival.

This year’s festival programming grows a new culinary branch: “Remember, We Are Born In The Garden,” a two-part exploration of the landscapes, ingredients, and evolving food systems of the American Northeast with @breadtreefarms.

On Wednesday, 11.15, Public Records x Breadtree Farms will explore the possibilities of perennial agriculture and the role of trees in shaping a more resilient regional food system. Join us at 6 PM UPSTAIRS for a conversation with Breadtree + @gravesmeredith before heading to The Atrium for a taste of what this collaboration is all about.

Across more than 800 acres in the Hudson Valley and Vermont, Breadtree is transforming former conventional dairy fields into productive agroforestry landscapes, integrating nut and fruit trees, grazing animals, and diverse plant communities. Their work extends beyond cultivation, bringing together growers, researchers, and food producers to understand the potential of crops such as chestnuts, hickory nuts, and acorns in the future of Northeastern agriculture.

Through our collaborative menu, we’ll tell the story of an evolving food landscape, looking at how chestnuts, woodland nuts, orchard fruits, wild plants, and regional botanicals can shape a more diverse and resilient food culture.

Together, we’ll move closer toward understanding how a deeper relationship with the plants, landscapes, and agricultural practices of the Northeast can inform what we grow, how we eat, and the future of regional food systems.

Reservations are available via Resy. RSVPs for the talk can be made through Dice.
