Introducing the December 2025 AAU Jo Mirza Legend Award recipients:

Frank Davis, Jr., who founded the Durham Striders Track Club in 1975

and

Nathaniel P. Carter, Jr., who founded the Sandhills Track Club in 1972

Both have tirelessly devoted most of their lives to the development of athletes through sport while achieving extraordinary success as coaches.

Kudos to both of them for all they have given to AAU and the sport of track and field!

In Loving Memory of Walt Cleary

Today, the Durham Strider family mourns the loss of someone who meant so much to our program. Walt Cleary was more than a supporter—he was a true champion of our athletes and our mission.

As the owner of his shoe store 9th Street Active Feet, Walt made it possible for our runners to compete with pride. He provided uniforms, running shoes, and generously donated to the team over the years. His unwavering support ensured that every athlete could show up confident, prepared, and ready to compete.

But more than his generosity, Walt gave belief. He believed in our athletes, in this team, and in everything the Durham Striders stand for. His kindness, commitment, and willingness to give will leave a lasting mark on our program.

Our team is better because of Walt & Gwen Cleary. His legacy will live on in every stride, every race, and every athlete who laces up their shoes.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life. 🕊️
