🗣️💸 Is it really impossible to imagine life without money? On Thu 29 Oct, join Laleh Khalili (@khalili.laleh), Ryan Davey, and Julio César Linares (@julio_linares_) with hosts Rémy-Paulin Twahirwa (@rpaulint) and Lilly Markaki (@dustbreeding) as they ask how money has shaped the ways we live and imagine the world – and what the systems of power surrounding it reveal about it.

🎟️🔗 Book your free place on our website via the link in bio.

Money is one of the most powerful technologies shaping modern life. From wage labour and banking to the digitalisation of finance, cryptocurrencies, and fantasies of cashless futures, money has transformed social relations and shaped our aspirations and ideas of value. Yet stories of its advent often reduce money to a natural or inevitable aspect of human societies. Has money ever been a mere tool, and is it really impossible to imagine life without it?

The evening will also include listening elements, exploring the ways music has long narrated experiences of aspiration, survival, debt, wealth and inequality, from gangsta rap in the United States and French rap conscient to folk music from across the world.

MØN€Y is the launch event and inaugural episode (to be recorded live) of After the Lecture (@after.thelecture), a new long-form radio programme bringing ideas, culture and critical thought beyond the university. Hosted by Rémy-Paulin Twahirwa and Lilly Markaki, the programme airs bimonthly on Voices Radio.

Hi friends! We’re starting a radio show! 🎙️

After the Lecture treats radio as a kind of université populaire: an open space where ideas, culture, and critical thought can circulate beyond the university. Each episode takes a single theme and moves between conversations with invited scholars, artists, and organisers and music, bringing different ways of thinking, speaking, and listening to the same question.

We’ll be sharing more information, including air dates, soon. But, for now, we’d love to invite you to join us for our launch event and first episode, featuring Laleh Khalili, Ryan Davey, and Julio César Linares recorded live at Ibraaz @ibraazlondon on 29 October.

Attendance is free, but registration is required — see the link in our bio.

It would mean the world to me if everyone I know donated (seriously *any* amount can make a difference) to Thaer’s fundraiser today and also shared the link (in my bio).🔗

Thaer has been offered a place on the MSc Public Health programme at King’s College London. His dream is to use this education to help rebuild Gaza’s public health system and help his people survive the g3n0cid3.

He has a 50% scholarship from KCL that has reduced fees to £14,000. This is the minimum amount he needs to raise and it has to be this month!! If he is able to raise substantial funds to cover his living costs and parts of his tuition fees, he will be prioritised for a partial Phoenix scholarship that can allow him to come to KCL and evacuate Gaza.

‘We’re calling on everyone who stands in solidarity with Palestine to help us reach this goal. Every donation, no matter how small, brings Thaer one step closer to beginning his studies. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser with your family, friends, and networks would make an enormous difference.’ by @dustbreeding

🚨Please DM for bank details if you can help (any amount is good!) and also amplify this URGENT message. Our comrades D. and S., Kurdish activists and political refugees persecuted by the Turkish state, have received negative second-instance decisions on their asylum application by the Greek State. D, facing a life-threatening illness, no longer has access to public healthcare.🚨@solidaritywithmigrants by @dustbreeding

Airing @stegiradio this Sunday.

For the final episode of A Reader’s Catalogue this season, I turn to the political writings of June Jordan—poet, journalist, activist, and teacher of extraordinary clarity and force.

Jordan’s work addresses questions that feel no less urgent today than in her own (evidently unfinished) present. Over the past few months, as I’ve grappled with unbearable grief over the genocide in Palestine and Lebanon, the rise of overt racism and xenophobia in the UK, the political dead end in Greece, and ongoing attacks on the university as a site of critical inquiry and collective struggle, her writing has offered a rare source of solace and direction.

I’m also sharing an imperfect recording of her 1969 essay on Black Studies separately as a reel here. It was too long to include in the mix, but it feels especially important to revisit in a moment like ours, with the dismantling of Black Studies in the US and the UK alike. by @dustbreeding

One month ago, our Solidarity Market raised just over £15,000 for vital grassroots initiatives providing food, supplies, and medicine for those who remain steadfast on their land in Palestine and the South of Lebanon. The funds we raised together have reached the ground and have been turned into life-saving mutual aid. THANK YOU to everyone who came together to make this possible.

160 bombs in 10 minutes. internal codename “eternal darkness.” israel, aided by the west, ending what’s left of humanity (not enough). 1 genocide 2 genocides 3. how many bodies before the apocalypse turns revelation. we are more dead than the dead because somehow we keep on living. our siblings murdered en masse in front of our digital eyes. no pit large enough to contain my shame. “spring will refuse to come.” their turn WILL come. “rats will inherit the heralded kingdom.” by @dustbreeding
