CURRENTLY ON VIEW | Dyani White Hawk’s "Visiting II" (2025) is on view in "Hold to This Earth: Works by Contemporary Indigenous North American Artists from Tia Collection" at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, United Kingdom, through April 18, 2027.

Presented in collaboration with Tia Collection, "Hold to This Earth" is a landmark exhibition of contemporary Indigenous North American art on a scale never before seen in the UK. Bringing together 65 works by 38 artists, including two significant new commissions, it also marks the first group exhibition to be staged in YSP’s prestigious Underground Gallery in its 20-year history.

Spanning sculpture, film, photography, painting, ceramics and fibre art, "Hold to This Earth" is an expansive, cross-generational exhibition offering a rare insight into the broad spectrum of work being produced by Indigenous North American artists today. The unifying theme connecting these diverse practices is the deep, complex and enduring relationship between people and land. Set within 500 acres of historic parkland shaped by centuries of human and non-human activity, YSP is well placed to facilitate conversations around land, material, memory and community. The title of the exhibition is drawn from "Defend Sacred Mountains," a series of text-based monoprints by artist, activist and teacher Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds. It is a call to action that evokes resilience, continuity and connection.

Tuesday, October 13, from 12:40–1:25PM, join a guided walking tour of Dyani White Hawk’s public artwork, 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘞𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 (2025), on permanent view at the Department of Chemistry’s Fraser Hall, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

“𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘞𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 intentionally faces and draws attention toward the river, leading viewers to the life source of water. This artwork can be seen from outside the building and is a beacon, a welcome to this place. Central designs within each panel reference the history of parfleche painting, a style of abstract painting by Indigenous Plains women historically made in earth paints on rawhide. Chemistry is embedded in this knowledge—in the earth paints, the creation of color, the use of mordants, the processes of tanning hides. Many of these designs speak to concepts in Očheti Šakowiŋ worldviews that honor our relationship to the land and to the necessity and reality of balance.” – Weisman Art Museum

This public program explores connections between White Hawk’s practice and the exhibition “Merciless”: Indigenous Lands Since 1776, and is part of Convening: Relational Futures, a two-day gathering of artists, scholars, cultural practitioners, and community leaders to examine Indigenous knowledge systems as epistemic frameworks for reshaping institutional practice.

To join the tour, meet at 12:40PM at the front desk of the Weisman Art Museum, 333 E River Road, Minneapolis.

Created from thousands of colourful beads, Visiting II by Dyani White Hawk was made in honour of Ojibwe artists Jim Denomie and George Morrison.

Jim Morrison, whose work is also included in this exhibition, made a series of collaged wooden column sculptures. Jim Denomie admired them so much that he made a version in his own painting style. White Hawk, a good friend of Denomie, wanted to honour his work in the same way.

The title honours the importance placed on the practice of visiting as a way to build respect and relationships in Native communities. It also reflects how the sculpture was made, with many people working together making individual beaded strips.

It’s the final week of 𝘋𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘪 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘸𝘬: 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 at Remai Modern in Saskatoon, Canada.

This major survey gathers 15 years of the artist’s work, featuring multimedia paintings, sculpture, video, and more. Rooted in intergenerational knowledge, Dyani White Hawk’s art centers on connection — between one another, past and present, earth and sky. By foregrounding Lakota forms and motifs, she challenges prevailing histories and practices surrounding abstract art. The exhibition unfolds across four sections named by the artist to speak to Indigenous value systems: See, Honour, Nurture, and Celebrate. Opening with early pieces that combine quillwork, beadwork, and painting, the artist examines, dissects, and reassembles elements of her own Sičáŋǧu Lakota and European American ancestries. Visitors will encounter Lakota forms and teachings that inform her practice, alongside works addressing urgent issues of settler colonialism and oppression.

𝘋𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘪 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘸𝘬: 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 is organized by Remai Modern, Saskatoon and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Press coverage for the exhibition includes Artforum, The New York Times, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, MPR News, Minn Post, Star Tribune, The Globe and Mail, Panorama Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art, and more.

Dyani White Hawk (Sičáŋǧu Lakota ) is a multidisciplinary artist best known for her mixed media works that merge Lakota traditions of abstraction with the sensibilities of so-called modernist Color Field painting.

By seamlessly integrating glass beadwork with acrylic painting, Dyani’s practice effectively highlights the foundational influence of Indigenous visual aesthetics on Western art and invites viewers to think critically about the imposed sets of value systems that exist within institutional art scholarship.
Abstraction is a crucial facet of Lakota visual culture, and can be traced through lane stitch beadwork, porcupine quillwork, parfleche painting, and other forms of personal adornment—practices all historically upheld by women. By grounding her practice in these customs, White Hawk’s meticulous treatment of both material and concept pays tribute to the women in her community, honoring their profound contributions to art history.

The artist has become especially well-renowned for her use of beadwork in reframing Eurocentric legacies of modernism by stitching interlocking panels of beads onto her original color field paintings so that “you meet the beadwork first.” This superimposed process of encountering the Lakota artform before the paint on canvas illustrates how White Hawk works to actively rearrange hierarchies of invention.
In addition to texture, the artist also toys with scale, often working monumentally, in turn expanding possibilities of celebration and functionality.

“Abstraction is a global practice, and abstraction is a human practice. So by creating works that draw from the rich history of Indigenous art forms, and making sure that they are big enough to  hold space on walls next to their counterparts who have been written into histories as the supposed inventors of abstraction, I am asking people to stop and to think critically about the development of abstraction on this continent, but also globally, and how we talk about it, how we’re teaching it, how we’re displaying it, and how we’re thinking about it.”

When Dyani White Hawk was invited to collaborate with Highpoint Editions in 2018, it became an opportunity to explore what printmaking could make possible.

Working alongside the studio team, she created Takes Care of Them: a suite of four large-scale screenprints honoring the importance of Indigenous women in caring for community. The collaboration allowed her to realize a body of work that could only exist through the unique possibilities of printmaking, and the edition has since entered major museum collections across the country.

Stories like Dyani's remind us that Highpoint Editions is more than a print studio. It's a place where artists and printmakers come together to collaborate and create work with lasting impact.

Help us carry that legacy forward. Support Highpoint Editions through our Press Forward campaign and make future collaborations like this possible. Learn more and give at our link in bio.
