Layli Long Soldier returns to the show to discuss her latest remarkable poetry collection We (and/or Wé). We talk about these two connotations of we/wé, the questions of address, audience, identity and kinship implicit in them both. We explore the many visual art installations documented within We and how they intersect with both poetry and community. We explore what it means to treat a poem, not yet finished, as having its own desires and needs different than the poet's. And we look at language and the law, navigating thorny questions of language, as a tool and as a weapon, when it comes to treaties, to Land Back, and Layli’s art and writing practice engaging with it all.

Tuesday, October 13, from 12:40–1:25PM, join a guided walking tour of Dyani White Hawk’s public artwork, 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘞𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 (2025), on permanent view at the Department of Chemistry’s Fraser Hall, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

“𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘞𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 intentionally faces and draws attention toward the river, leading viewers to the life source of water. This artwork can be seen from outside the building and is a beacon, a welcome to this place. Central designs within each panel reference the history of parfleche painting, a style of abstract painting by Indigenous Plains women historically made in earth paints on rawhide. Chemistry is embedded in this knowledge—in the earth paints, the creation of color, the use of mordants, the processes of tanning hides. Many of these designs speak to concepts in Očheti Šakowiŋ worldviews that honor our relationship to the land and to the necessity and reality of balance.” – Weisman Art Museum

This public program explores connections between White Hawk’s practice and the exhibition “Merciless”: Indigenous Lands Since 1776, and is part of Convening: Relational Futures, a two-day gathering of artists, scholars, cultural practitioners, and community leaders to examine Indigenous knowledge systems as epistemic frameworks for reshaping institutional practice.

To join the tour, meet at 12:40PM at the front desk of the Weisman Art Museum, 333 E River Road, Minneapolis.

Created from thousands of colourful beads, Visiting II by Dyani White Hawk was made in honour of Ojibwe artists Jim Denomie and George Morrison.

Jim Morrison, whose work is also included in this exhibition, made a series of collaged wooden column sculptures. Jim Denomie admired them so much that he made a version in his own painting style. White Hawk, a good friend of Denomie, wanted to honour his work in the same way.

The title honours the importance placed on the practice of visiting as a way to build respect and relationships in Native communities. It also reflects how the sculpture was made, with many people working together making individual beaded strips.
