Episode 9 on Teeth & Tunes: Trina Morgan

This week on Teeth and Tunes, I am joined by my wife, Trina Morgan, who has worked alongside me on the business side of the practice since my DFW days.

Join us for a conversation on why dental insurance hasn’t kept up, how we escaped the high-volume treadmill, and the philosophy that reshaped our practice: more dentistry on fewer patients.

We take some time to look back at how a typical dental benefit has sat at roughly $1,000 to $1,500 a year since 1990, never keeping pace with the real cost of supplies, lab work, and materials, and why that pushed us to gradually walk away from capitation plans and restrictive PPO contracts. Trina shares how replacing those plans with an in-house discounted family fee plan proved far more profitable than playing by insurance company rules, while I explain the “calf roping” trap of high-volume dentistry, why young dentists shouldn’t take on their patients’ financial limitations as their own, and how intraoral cameras and high-quality photography transformed both patient education and the quality of my work.

Topics Covered: why dental insurance benefits have been stagnant since 1990, moving from single-tooth fixes to comprehensive diagnosis, the volume trap of multi-operatory dentistry, dropping capitation and bad PPO contracts, building a profitable in-house family fee plan, Dr. Pete Dawson’s “more dentistry on fewer patients” philosophy, the power of patient education tools, and the small in-office team versus the larger digital team behind a modern practice.

So excited and proud to release this episode with Dr. Justin Bonner 🙌🏻

This week on Teeth and Tunes, I sat down with Dr. Justin Bonner, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Northwest Texas OMS in Lubbock, for a conversation on the winding road into oral surgery, why referrals — not ads — drive a specialty practice, and how everything from phone etiquette to the music in the operatory is really marketing. Dr. Bonner shares how he grew up in a dental family, took an unconventional route through school, and pivoted from a path toward medical school to oral surgery after shadowing and interning along the way. We compared how our very different practice models shape our approach — a fee-for-service complex-care practice that grew through social media versus a referral-based oral surgery practice that treats the referring dentist as its true customer.

Topics Covered: an unconventional path into oral surgery, why careers don’t have to be rigidly planned, residency and surgical training, how practice type shapes marketing, referral-based growth and treating the referring office as the customer, the “everything is marketing” philosophy, and using music to calm patients and set the office tone.

Reflecting on the 2nd Annual MOD Symposium…

@themodinstitute - I was immensely impressed by your organization and execution of the symposium. The entire setup (at a remote location no less) for live patient demonstrations was streamlined and highly efficient. The education was bar none demonstrating to us how digital technology is rapidly changing our profession- for the better.

The skill and talent of the doctors and assistant team to deliver exceptional care PLUS results was stellar.

This is the 2nd year in a row that @dr.wallyrenne and his team of faculty dentists clearly talk the talk and walk the walk! From initial records to final delivery there is not a hitch in their step- no pre-baked pies, but rather real dentistry, in a challenging setup, in front of 200 peers.

They simply rocked it.

Then there was the comradery: seeing old friends and reacquainting with folks from previous symposiums/courses was uplifting as always.

MOD had the best social events I have EVER attended. They went TEXAS all the way with a very generous gift card to the renowned @allensboots , complete with BBQ (brisket of course 🤠), live music and mechanical bull riding for those daring souls who wished to give it a go (that window of opportunity has closed for yours truly 😆).

@austinproperhotel was certainly top tier for accommodations.

To sum it all up…legendary!

🙌🏻

Recording tonight with my best girl 😉

We’ve been team mates in life: from raising our family to growing spiritually to building multiple dental business together.

While I was working on becoming the best clinician I could be and serving patients, Trina was learning how to run a business and make it profitable.

I’m thankful I’ve had such an awesome teammate to navigate through dental insurance, accounts receivable, team building, you name it.

Trina brings a great perspective to Teeth & Tunes on how to balance work & life.

Can’t wait to get this episode out to you all :)
