When I met my beautiful friend, Jiali, she had gone from never having heard of homebirth to choosing it. The bravery of this, of reviving something buried so deeply in her ancestry that there was little spoken memory of it, astounded me. She chose to face the great unknown landscape of birth in a new, yet ancient, way.

It was an honour to witness Jiali bring her son into this life. She told me afterward that in China there is a saying that to give birth is to pass by the gates of hell. I know birth is different for every woman, and for some it is the single most challenging life experience.
That is how we are stripped down to our core and rebuilt as the mother.
It is a rite of passage.
Reaching our limits and going beyond allows us to rise to the highest ecstasy.

When things got hard, then harder; when my friend was exhausted, she went deeper. And in the darkness, I saw a lionness emerge, roaring her child into being.

Jiali, you have given your son an incredible gift;
birth in freedom,
in the authority of his fierce mama, listening to her body and directing her attendants to her needs.

Jiali, your power resounds through the universe.

Hi, Women! I've decided to start hosting a monthly womens circle in YEG; a little time carved out to gather, share laughter and tears and stories, and see what magic we can make together.

This is Papa Cody, the cornerstone of our family, who tirelessly kept the birth pool warm, fed me drinks and snacks and let me hang off his frame through the sixteen hours of active labour leading to Helen's birth. Who cleaned up the whole house afterward and treated me like an absolute queen through my postpartum healing.

Who has the sweetest heart and discerning mind.

Who can be a fierce protector and also has the strength and calm of a tree in the forest.

Who doesn't love social media or public displays of affection. 😬

I really love this man, and walking our paths together.

I envision a future in which it isn't assumed that birth is traumatic, or that postpartum equates PTSD and depression.
A future in which it isn't taboo to ask a woman her birth story;
A future in which she will tell it to anyone who will listen, the same way a young lover wants only to talk about how they met their love.

How does this future become the present?
One Sovereign birth at a time.

My role is to support women, as we change the world by birthing OUR own way,
claiming our ecstasy; our bliss; our POWER.

There, under the water, in the dim light, was a dark head of hair. Two more pushes & she was out, twisting her body as she emerged. I scooped her out of the water, turning her face to me, & she was smiling. I rubbed her back & she gave out little mewls. On Sunday, just before midnight, under a Full Moon, I birthed my daughter Helen into this world.

Helen & I were helped to bed & wrapped together in warm towels. I was exhausted & complete. As Helen latched on my breast, I almost wanted to do it all over again right then, it was so perfect. My placenta was born quickly & easily & my partner & I burnt the cord soon, since it was short & tugging on our daughter. We slept deeply through the rest of the night, my body curled around hers.

It was the hardest I've ever worked; physically; mentally; spiritually, for the greatest treasure. The following weeks were the longest extended period of pure bliss I have known.

Birth, & everything before & after, is an experience I look forward to having over & over. I envision a world where THAT is the standard; THAT is the way women & men see birth. Not scary, not dangerous, not traumatic, but divine. That's why I'm a Birth Keeper.

I'm very excited to have just completed the Radical Birth Keeper School, learning at the feet of the incredible Yolande (@bauhauswife ) and Emilee (@freebirthsociety ).

It was Emilee's podcast that first got me interested in physiological birth, and took me down the path that led to the sovereign birth of my daughter.

I'm so happy to now be able to offer support to other women who feel called to remember that birth is sacred, natural, and belongs to us!
