Don’t let discomfort dictate direction.

Building muscle takes time. Not weeks, not even a few months. It takes years of consistent training, recovery, and EXTENDED periods in a calorie surplus, as we know if we aren’t in a surplus there is a great chance we are not building.

Most people never truly see how much muscle they’re capable of building because as soon as they start feeling a little softer or less defined, they pull back and diet. I’ve been guilty of that myself in the past, letting discomfort dictate direction.

But this time, I’m doing the opposite. I’m trusting the process and pushing through the phase where my old self would have hit reverse. Because progress doesn’t come from constantly chasing leanness. It comes from giving your body the time and resources it needs to grow.

That said, IMO a bulk/gaining phase isn’t a free pass to let things slide. The gaining phase should demand just as much discipline, structure, and intention as a diet. Hitting your targets, training hard, managing recovery, and staying within range of your plan is how you truly rinse the phase for all it’s worth.

This season is about playing the long game. Delayed gratification, patience, and faith in the process. The results will show in time.

ā€œComparison is the thief of joy and progressā€

Have you ever felt like you’re constantly measuring yourself against others—only to feel frustrated and stuck? I’d be lying if I said I haven’t.

I used to compare myself to others all the time wondering why I wasn’t ā€œbig enough like themā€ or chasing the latest workout trends thinking I was doing all the right things. Over the last 2 years, I have knuckled down focusing on just me and my lane, not only physically but also mentally. I logged my workouts - pushing for progression, managed stress/cortisol levels and shifted my mindset from competing with others to solely self improvement, to name a few. All whilst also building a family, home, diving into other personal hobbies that take up immense amounts of time, the list goes on.

My physique may not have progressed as quickly as others but looking back I’m happy and proud of how far it has come and we are only still just getting started!! With @lewyblackmore guiding the process we have some big future goals set.
A long way off yet but trust the process, knuckle down, love & feel every part of the journey. This is exactly where I want to be.

My tips and what else helped me?

• Adopting a ā€œyou vs youā€ mindset and focusing on personal progress rather than external validation is so important in everything we do if we want to succeed.
• Building sustainable habits rather than chasing trends.
• Measuring progress the right way and celebrating small wins to keep motivated by setting personalised fitness goals.
• Celebrating non-scale victories (energy levels, confidence, consistency) and finally visual progress (photos, how clothes fit etc).

Progress is personal. Stay in your lane, put in the work, and watch how far you go.

ā€œI won’t chase you for your check-insā€ is the new trend in coaching

Cool, I will chase your check-ins. I’ll also follow up if I don’t get a response.

I will also hold you accountable even if that means having tough conversations

Injured? Doesn’t mean we can’t make progress elsewhere

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT šŸ‘šŸ½

@lll.ash current progress has been nothing short of amazing. A mum of 2, works full time and can still graft and get it done.

The goal was to get leaner whilst also building an engine and not jeopardise performance or lose muscle mass in doing so.

Ash has had to navigate and manage stress from multiple different angles in life, a lot that anyone would throw the towel in from. We’ve had some niggling injuries along the way stopping us from performing our best but still controlling what we can and making do.

There’s been times where we can’t attend the gym due to time restrictions and schedules however ash went out of her way to set up a home gym and still do what’s required, even got the kids in on the action doing workouts and going for runs/walks (loved seeing that)

And a super rewarding part seeing us get on top of some gut health issues, finding foods that don’t make her feel bloated, inflamed and sluggish which ultimately carries over into the rest of her life, training, home and work.

If your goal is associated with how you want to be perceived by others you will likely not succeed

Skipping meals, tracking roughly, skipping the last 1-2 reps of your sets when no one is watching/in the gym

These all may seem like minor things or not a big deal but you’re not only skipping reps, you’re training yourself to be someone who quits when it’s uncomfortable. That habit shows up at work, home and in your physique.

Notice the ones in the gym with great physiques work hard even when no one is around they’re not doing it for anyone else other than themselves

Small things done properly and consistently over a long period of time yield the greatest results

One day you will tell your story and it will be someone else’s survival guide!

Everyone goes through their own type of hard and everyone has their own coping mechanisms. If I can share my story and it one day helps 1 single person break through a barrier they might be stuck at then I have succeeded.

The past few months have not been easy by any means and there were multiple times I felt beaten, just like any process there will be ā€œset backsā€ or road blocks but these are where we learn, take it head on and figure out a way.

Once past stop look back and think of what we could have done better if anything to progress.

ā€œAm I happy with how I handle that situation, week or season?ā€ If not, what would I have done differently? If yes then we should be happy/proud of the result we are getting.

It goes without saying that the majority of the time your result will be a reflection of the effort you put in.

I look back on the past 15 weeks now and I have achieved so much, still not 100% but I also know my pathway forward and am excited for what’s to come and the challenges I’ll still face along the way.

Be the best version of yourself, hold grace where necessary and reframe the set backs/road blocks as challenges testing you getting you ready to level up.

Also have some fucking fun with it hence the song choice 🤣 by @dylanbell__

Do not let what the scale shows ruin a good week of progress or drive you to saying fuck it and blowing out or worst dropping your calories even more to compensate.

If you have nailed everything and can look back and say yup I was on target then look for other signs of progress

Clothes fitting better
More confidence
Hitting pb’s in the gym
Feeling lighter/moving better
Healthier lifestyle choices (navigating social events)
Mindset shifts

These are all signs of progress no matter how big or small you may think they are! by @dylanbell__

We love to major in the minors. It’s way more fun talking about cutting edge science or stretch mediated Hypertrophy than it is to talk about lifting heavy things 3-5 X per week for 5-10years.

The basics aren’t a stepping stone to advanced training, the basics are the training do them well and you’ll make more progress that 99% of people and 100% of the ones chasing trends

Here are the 5 essentials for building muscle:

Progressive overload: You need to gradually increase the demand on your muscles over time (more weight, reps, sets, or better technique). Without this, nothing else really matters.

Sufficient protein intake: roughly 1.6–2.2g per kg of bodyweight per day, spread across meals, to help@ypur body repair and grow.

Caloric surplus: Muscle growth requires energy availability; a slight surplus (~250–500 kcal above maintenance) speeds things along, though body recomposition at maintenance is possible for beginners or those returning to training.

Adequate training volume and frequency: Hitting each muscle group with enough total sets per week (roughly 10–20 sets depending on experience) and training it often enough (2x/week per muscle tends to beat 1x/week).

Recovery (Sleep & Rest): Your muscle is built in recovery, not in the gym. 7–9 hours of sleep and adequate rest between sessions let that adaptation actually happen.

Lastly

Mind muscle connection: This one kicks up a storm more often than not but good luck trying to build a big chest if your delts keep taking over…. Period. by @dylanbell__
