Moby Dick (V10) šŸ‹
FA: @jasonkehl_cryptochild circa 2000

The king line of Maryland.

I’ve tried this problem over the last three seasons and until this year it felt impossible for me. Last month I had a breakthrough session, doing all the moves for the first time. Weight training this summer made the difference. Nothing fancy - just bench press, curls, and weighted pull ups. In hindsight I would have added bent rows and deadlifts to that list as well. This climb annihilated my upper back.

Over several sessions I found beta that worked for me. I figured out a sequence using a micro-bump on the left hand sloper to more easily reach the crimp under the roof. I also use a knee scum to help set up for the crux throw and allow me to breathe for half a second (shoutout to @_krungle for that idea.)

This one means a lot to me. It forced me to become a stronger climber, improve my mindset, and learn new techniques. It pushed me further than I thought I could go and helped me believe that I’m not done progressing yet. Maybe 35 is the new 25? I don’t know what projects I’ll focus on next, but Moby will be hard to top. It just might be the best boulder I’ve ever climbed. by @dylanontherocks

Cirque Du Soleil V3ish FA
This is, without a doubt, the craziest sequence I’ve ever done on a boulder problem. It’s also one of the most fun. I honestly don’t even know how to describe this thing, so it’s better just to watch the video. I will say this; the sequence I use isn’t in any way contrived. It is legitimately the easiest way to climb the boulder. If you are tall, well, good luck. To find it, go to the Tsunami boulder at Red Spring and walk straight uphill for about 100 yards. #dldfas taken in Las Vegas, Nevada by @dylanontherocks

Simple Gift (V1)

A really lovely slab of rock. It climbs well, but I honestly don’t expect it to be repeated. The top out is the main issue. Your options are either a delicate walk off down and left or a dirty scramble up a chimney section to the top of the ridge. It’s very easy, but a bit spooky. Just to the left of Croc Block at Rocks State Park. I think it may be a first ascent, but who can tell for sure. by @dylanontherocks

Smoke n Ash (V2)

This line has been on my mind for a while, but every time I’ve walked over to the base, I haven’t felt ready. My head just wasn’t there yet.

Today was the day. It was exactly the experience I hoped to have with this boulder. I was inspired by an old @deadpointmag video of @jasonkehl_cryptochild climbing it rope-less once upon a time.

I’m not sure how often it gets climbed in this style, but I am certain that it should be more. It’s a total classic. by @dylanontherocks

ā€œKindergartenā€ 5.1
Carderock, MD

Yesterday was a big day for the Demyanek family. Hazel climbed her first ever outdoor route and couldn’t get enough! As soon as she came down she wanted to go right back up. She likes climbing with me in the gym, but she *loved* climbing outside. Truly after my own heart.

Climbing has given me so much over the last 20 years. Sharing it with my kids and seeing them enjoy it is one of the best feelings in fatherhood. We still have a lot of logistics to work out in our family climbing day game plan, mostly centering on my 2 year old son, but yesterday was a great start.

Thanks to Uncle @derekdemyanek for joining us and taking photos! @jenniferdemyanek was of course the unsung hero of the whole day, making everything possible ā™„ļø by @dylanontherocks

ā€œShades Of Grayā€ (V2)

A beautiful piece of quartzite tucked into a lush hillside with perfectly sculpted slopers that beg to be climbed. I must have done half a dozen laps on it trying to refine my sequence into its most efficient form.

These are the experiences I seek out season after season. Give me beauty, flow, and rock quality over difficulty any day. The access for this one is a bit sensitive, so send me a message if you are interested. by @dylanontherocks

Eye Of The Tiger (V5?)

Another afternoon spent bushwhacking through the Susquehanna jungle. After getting thoroughly lost, I finally managed to lay eyes on this overhanging face that @bergey_steven pointed me towards.

This line is excellent and almost worth the hike. If you have a boat you will be able to access it much more easily than I did. For the rest of you landlubbers, I’d recommend a machete. by @dylanontherocks

The day I met @jenniferdemyanek we went climbing together on the north shore of Oahu. I wasn’t her date, just a potential new friend. Someone to share an adventure with. And what an adventure it has been.

Before this weekend, it had been over 5 years since we climbed on a rope together. Between raising two kids and building our careers we have had to prioritize other things during this season, but the love for adventure never went away. Our short trip to Colorado was a reminder to not lose sight of the things that bring us joy, the people we want to be, and the life we want to build.

A big thanks to my parents for watching the kids and making it possible!

The Susquehanna River is a wonderfully wild place. A place not bound to be kind to man as Thoreau would say. This time of year it is absolutely exploding with wildflowers and critters of various sizes.

I spent a few hours exploring and getting lost among the rock formations. I came upon this arête and decided to give it a try. It turned out to be much better than I expected. I found the crux to be the final move to the lip. While it is not difficult, it requires full commitment.

I don’t know the name of this line, but perhaps some of you good Pennsylvania folks could help me out with the history?

Update: The line is called ā€œVlasic Classicā€

July reveals the full glory of the Gunpowder — layer upon layer of living fractals. The closer you look, the deeper it goes.

This particular stretch winds through pristine forest just below Prettyboy Dam. On the southern bank, a secluded alcove holds the Axecaliber boulder — nestled into a mossy hillside, enmeshed in sprawling mountain laurel and shaded by the stained-glass leaves of sweet birch. Above it all stands a grove of slowly dying hemlocks, filling the air with a taste of western wilderness.

Here the river runs deep and narrow, spraying white noise loud enough to drown out everything except you, the rock, and green within green within green. by @dylanontherocks

Director Toad 🐸
Second Ascent

An absolute banger of a line from @dr.rajclimbs. One of the best quality blocks around - should be on every DMV climbers hit list.

It starts low on a cool incut crimp. From there you head up and right into a sloper rail feature. You build your feet under you and set up for the crux. Raj did a more static sequence with an intermediate slimper. I opted to huck straight for the lip - a really rad move. The top out is luxurious with a massive blocky feature for the final mantle.

I was hesitant to try today - it being 84° in late June and all - but I’m glad I chose to go for it. I was sweating hard, but Megos was right - there are no bad conditions, only weakness. Difficulty wise, I think this problem is spot on for V6. by @dylanontherocks
