Here’s one from the archives -Arrow Peak with my brother @dylanontherocks in Colorado circa 2012. This one is an epic, and we didn’t make the summit, so we plan to return one day to complete the objective.

Arrow is a remote 13,809-foot peak in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado, wayyyy the hell out there. There are a lot of ways to get there, but we chose to attack it like we were two dudes in our 20s (who hadn’t both almost died in the mountains on separate occasions yet). In a 3 day weekend, we drove like 6 hours to Durango, CO and then got on the narrow gauge railroad that cuts through the mountain range up to Silverton. We got off the train at the half way point in the middle of freaking nowhere because it was the closest point to the Arrow peak basin (with plans to get picked up by the train on the way out in about a day). From there, it was a 12-mile hike to the base of the climb to set up base camp. We planned to go light and fast and brought no ropes or gear other than helmets and a backpack with water after leaving our camp. After leaving the train, we only saw two other humans -a party of 2 climbing Vestal peak, adjacent Arrow, so we agreed that if either of our parties had issues on the climb, we would just shout as loud as we could to the other team, since civilization was a half day hike and another half day train ride away.

Dylan and I had a blast scrambling up the peak, but since the whole range is shaped like a wave, each peak gets steeper and steeper as you go. Once the peak started to get vertical, since we had no ropes and no protection, we decided to bail. We agreed that we would come back later with a rope to finish the route (it’s only been about 15 years since then, but we’re still gonna do it!). Then we down climbed, packed up camp, and lost the trail on the way back down to the train, almost missing the train and getting stranded in the San Juan’s. We were using a map and compass. The good ole days. The whole story is actually detailed in the book I plan to release this year if I can get off my butt and do it… so check it out some time if you feel so inclined.

An amazing line put up by @dylanontherocks! Only 18min from Timo and an easy, flat approach, this one should definitely be a classic in the state.

Unlike most of the rock on this section of the NCR, the grips are really cool and they aren’t too sharp. From a sloping start hold, you make your way up some comfy right sidepulls and funky left pinches and crimps. The hard climbing is over at only about 10-12ft, and you ride jugs to the top of the boulder!

Just another @dylanontherocks 💎. One of the best of the grade in Red Rock for sure. Nice one to cap off my 500th Red Rock ascent.

We got to check out this awesome bloc opened up by @dylanontherocks after he put HOURS of work into finding and cleaning it. We warmed up on the easier lines then put up some harder variations! The approach is a bit long but it’s the NCR so it’s chill.

The rock quality, hold selection, and movement on the lines are great! Some choss still needs to be ripped off, but all the holds on the established lines are pretty solid.

Misc. outdoors from the last month or so:

L’œuf Massif 7B+ 2nd ascent (FA @height_mann)
Tyler gave this 7A+ originally which is crazy to me as it took nearly an hour of work (although my beta was completely different lol)

Ichabod 6B/+ flash 2nd ascent (FA @dylanontherocks)
Great line put up by Dylan as one of the first lines on this king bloc at Fallston. I’m excited to go back for some of the harder lines soon!

Bring the Heatwole 7A+

Streaked 7A/C/Easiest 8A I’ve ever done
Completely antistyle and a truly heinous experience to work this one. Relieved to have sent in a few tries.

Out of the Comfort Zone 6C/+ flash
Fun campus beta

Get Down on It 7A/+ 2nd go
Topout crux

Dynosaur (Direct? Eliminate?) 7A/+/B/+
The description for this climb is buns. Skipped as many holds as possible to try to follow it.

The Art of Flight 7B/C 2nd or 3rd ascent???
Put up by Skyler, who’s apparently taller than 6 feet, I had to do very different beta. Even so, I think 7B/+ is fair, especially if it’s not 80° 🥵
