The 9 types of portrait lighting every photographer needs to know — whether you shoot natural light, studio flash, or continuous light.

Lighting patterns aren’t complicated or “studio-only.” They’re simply about how shadows fall on the face, and once you understand them, you’ll make better lighting decisions anywhere: on location or in the studio.

In the full video, I break down:
Split, rim/backlight, butterfly, clamshell, loop, Rembrandt, short lighting, broad lighting, and cross lighting — with clear examples and practical tips you can apply immediately.

If you’ve ever struggled with where to place your light (or the sun), this is foundational knowledge that will change how you see portraits.

One very important caveat, which you’ll get from the full length video, is that lighting patterns describe how the face relates to the light not how the face relates to the camera.

I wanted to share with you a this #photoshoot I did with @dyrenlee which is a mix od continuous light and flash. I also wanted to share with you that I am excited to be headed to this years @imagingusa conference in Nashville on January 22nd through the 24th!
