I’m presenting a new body of paintings titled: The Feeling of Memory.
Please, join me and the @mcontemporary team for Opening Drinks on the 7 May.

An artist talk will take place at 2pm on the 2 May in the form of a conversation between myself and Todd Fuller (@fuller_todd) abt our respective practices and how we connect conceptually, thematically and through our processes of making.

In this series of works, I am interested in the motif of the oval buried within the ground of the painted surface. This motif is a reference to two visual ideas. The first is that of an oval locket, one I inherited from her Armenian grandmother; the second is from photography, that of a photographic oval vignette. In this current body of paintings the oval motif is a symbolic and poetic link to the idea of a keepsake.

The development of these paintings coincides with my intrigue and love for working with wax as a medium and as a surface. Wax is an important medium for me because it is a substance that has the ability to form a physical memory, is fragile and has the potential to form a resistant barrier. As such the medium of wax ties into thematic and conceptual issues such as fragility, remembering and resistance.

Upon this layer, I often uses a repetitive singular mark that I think of as a tacking stitch. This stitch, in turn is a reference to my first engagement with the aesthetics of embroidery and carpet weaving as a child.

These elements are brought together with a further consideration prevalent in my practice; that of the process and methodologies of reductionism, its path to minimal abstraction and its poetics. In this visual orbit, a key question when I paint is: how to bring together the stimuli of a diasporic history into a contemporary context that facilitates new visual possibilities? .

ARTIST TALK | Elefteria Vlavianos and Todd Fuller

Join us this Saturday, 2 May, from 2–4pm for an afternoon in conversation with exhibiting artists Elefteria Vlavianos and Todd Fuller as they discuss the ideas, processes and personal narratives behind their current solo exhibitions.

In 'The Feeling of Memory', Elefteria Vlavianos explores the fragile inheritance of post-memory, the ways stories, rituals and histories are carried across generations and embedded within intimate objects, material surfaces and acts of remembering.

Presented in the Annexe, 'Simple Love' sees Todd Fuller unveil a deeply tender hand-drawn animation centred on Northern Beaches local Adam George; a meditation on queer identity, masculinity, companionship and the many forms love can take.

This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from both artists as they unpack two distinct yet deeply human bodies of work concerned with memory, visibility, connection and renewal.

ARTIST STUDIO VISIT | Elefteria Vlavianos

Earlier this week, we visited Elefteria in her studio ahead of her upcoming exhibition, ‘The Feeling of Memory’.

Seeing the works in situ reveals a quiet complexity that doesn’t translate in reproduction, the encaustic surfaces, the subtle shifts in tone, and the way light is absorbed into the wax. Each piece unfolds slowly, holding layers of memory, material, and mark.

There’s a precision to the process, but also a sense of fragility, moments of building, obscuring and revealing that sit at the core of this new body of work.

I’m involved in a project titled The Dada Tiny Art Show that is part of The Fake gALLeRy and it is coming to Sydney!

Twenty-Six! Australian artists will be exhibiting alongside 40 Artists from across the globe.

The Fake gALLeRy is a traveling Gallery and the brainchild of the Canadian experimental filmmaker, performance artist and curator Allison Beda @therealfakegallery. This project is inspired by Beda’s attraction to Marcel Duchamps’ artwork Boite-en-Valise (box in a suitcase).

Beda views her Fake gALLeRy as a project that seeks to participate in both public and private artistic events or happenings as a means to facilitate creative experiences.

The project draws on the Dadaist ethos and seeks to inject a more subversive and comedic, approach to making and exhibiting in order to re-question how artists might engage with their art community both locally and globally.

The artists pay homage to a series of Dadaist ideas such as assemblage, whimsy, absurdity, irreverence, spontaneity and chance; whilst simultaneously keeping to the key curatorial parameter of the exhibition, that no 2D work be larger than 6.36 x 6.35 cm and all 3d work with the guideline of 3.85 x 3.85 cm big.

Intimacy and interiority are key components to the works in this exhibition as they seek to challenge our thinking of how artists can collaborate together, open channels of dialogue across various cities, and countries, thus offering alternative possibilities of art making and exhibiting together.

This exhibition has been to New York, London, Paris, Firenze, Mexico City, Oaxaca City, Berkeley, Castine, Vancouver and beyond.
