Ernst Yohji Jaeger

Ernst Yohji Jaeger (b. 1990, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) starts his paintings with the process of applying, building up and sanding away layers of paint. He continues this until something emerges on the canvas that demands to be formulated. Although he initiates the process, his practice strives to relinquish as much control as possible over the eventual image. He is less interested in formulating or executing a predetermined idea, concept or message, and more in the challenge of letting go of what is familiar, conscious or learned. The layers of colour that have accumulated beneath the painting’s surface through his preparatory process give the image its foundation. Upon this ground appear architectural elements, figures, plants, shadows, various objects and motifs that he carefully pulls from his observations of everyday life.

See three of his paintings at Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier in the ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ exhibition.

Crèvecœur @galerie_crevecoeur presents Calamondin, a solo exhibition by Ernst Yohji Jaeger @e_yohji , on view at the gallery’s 5 & 7 rue de Beaune space in Paris from 11 June to 25 July 2026. Born in 1990 in Germany and now living and working in Vienna, Jaeger takes his title from the small citrus tree that has lived in his studio through a near-death and a slow recovery — a private ordeal that becomes, across the paintings gathered here, a way of thinking about what can and cannot be forced out of a body of work. Thom Oosterhof @thomoosterhofprojects paid a visit.

Calamondin

5 & 7 rue de Beaune, Paris
Through July 25, 2026

« In Ernst’s studio, there is a small tree – a calamondin tree. It almost died two years ago, when Ernst was going through a difficult time, when he felt the need to stop, to take some distance. We spoke, we suggested that he leave Vienna for a bit, that he go to Japan. We saw each other there. The most personal of our conversations happened in a ramen restaurant near the flea market. We didn’t talk about deadlines, we told him that he had the unmeasurable luck to produce something meaningful enough to outlive his own existence, to be the maker of these paintings, that he was free, that he could choose the life he wanted to life, the painting he wanted to paint. That we would wait. The tree, which had become a leafless bit of wood, slowly, become green again. When Ernst came back from Kyoto this year, the tree had some small flowers. And while he was painting the works for this exhibition, the tree started to bear fruit – growing, as it seemed to him – at the same pace as the paintings themselves. » Alix Dionot-Morani

Calamondin
A solo exhibition by Ernst Yohji Jaeger (@e_yohji) is on view at Crèvecœur (@galerie_crevecoeur) in Paris — until 25 July 2026.

Taking its title from a small calamondin tree in the artist’s studio — once nearly dead, later flowering and bearing fruit — the exhibition reflects on painting as something cultivated over time. Across whales, phoenixes, flames, dogs, flowers, and sleeping figures, Jaeger moves between figuration and abstraction, allowing memory, consciousness, and inner experience to take shape through images that feel both fragile and concentrated.

Numéro art brings you to @galerie_crevecoeur in Paris to meet up with German-Japanese artist Ernst Yohji Jaeger @e_yohji on the occasion of his new exhibition.

Born of a singular cultural synthesis, Ernst Yohji Jaeger’s latest works unfold as a dreamscape where personal mythology, symbolic imagery, and painterly memory converge. The German-Japanese artist, based in Vienna presents a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive, rooted in lived experience while opening onto collective imaginaries.

The works reveal an unusual dialogue between Japanese visual culture and German painting traditions. Neo-symbolist echoes coexist with manga-like tenderness; faces often resist fixed identities, inhabiting an ambiguous space where age, gender, and character remain fluid. Flames recur across several canvases, transforming interiors and landscapes alike into psychological states. Fire becomes both a destructive and regenerative force, illuminating the exhibition’s dreamlike logic.

Dreams are indeed central to Ernst Yohji Jaeger’s practice. Rather than drawing on established mythologies, many paintings originate in deeply personal visions. Yet these private narratives are filtered through art historical references that subtly shape their compositions. One work borrows the structure of a Gauguin painting while transforming it into a meditation on childhood, solitude, and the enduring desire to retreat into spaces of imagination. Elsewhere, whalesand vast seas evoke both Moby-Dick and Japanese pictorial traditions, creating scenes suspended between innocence and latent threat.

The exhibition also reveals Jaeger’s fascination with German folklore and metaphysical architecture. Phoenixes rise from flames, spectral dogs traverse theatrical landscapes, and enigmatic buildings recall the dream architectures of Giorgio de Chirico. Jaeger achieves a rare balance between narrative clarity and poetic mystery.

On view until July 25, 2026.

« This is how he understands the myths that paints, coming to the surface of his paintings in this exhibition – the snake, the whale, the phoenix. These are “objective structures of reality,” patterns for the ways in which things happen. “When a whale swallows a prophet, when a whale appears in Moby Dick, it’s always truth, not fiction. The cosmology functions, whether you believe it or not.” And painting is where these structures live consciously. “From the outside, you paint – but what is painted, this happens inside yourself.” In the work ‘A Dream as Deep as the Ocean’ – at the bottom of the composition, there is a figure asleep in bed. Above, an enormous whale crosses a nocturnal ocean. On the surface, a sailboat. The two spaces exist without a border, nor a perspective. You’re in bed and on the high seas. It’s not a depiction of a dream but the structure of dream itself. »
