The Eagles Mere Conservancy hosted a free Hiking 101 Workshop on August 29 and 30, made possible by generous sponsors including AllTrails Navigation, Purple Lizard Maps, Mountainsmith, Sawyer, Cnoc Outdoors, The North Face, and Worlds End Coffee Company. Special thanks go to EMC Board Member Marty Hammond for spearheading this endeavor, as well as Board President Lori Faeth. The Conservancy also extends its gratitude to Dr. Naomi Pennington, an Orthopedic Certified Specialist physical therapist, for sharing her expert guidance on trail readiness and injury prevention. When the workshop was first planned, the goal was simple: share basic trail knowledge and help participants build confidence outdoors. What unfolded over the weekend went far beyond that. Together, 20 hikers stepped onto the trail, pushed past their comfort zones, and successfully completed a 5-mile trek to the Haystacks with 500 feet of elevation gain. Countless moments throughout the weekend proved that the outdoors belongs to anyone willing to take that first step. To top it all off, the Eagles Mere Inn opened its doors exclusively for a post-hike celebration.
