This year for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation I wanted to illuminate the path that led to the implementation of the Residential School System. At the college where I work I created a display of the Canadian governmental reports that were instrumental in clarifying the vision of the Residential School System and informed the initialization and operations of the schools. Many of the students that I spoke to during this last week were mostly aware of NDTR, but few understood the long, committed path that Canada took to ensure that the schools broke Indigenous families’ and communities’ ties to culture and way of life by removing the children. - The Bagot Commission Report (1845) recommended a federal system of residential schools and emphasized the value of removing Indigenous children to ‘civilize’ them.

The Ryerson Report (1847) offered “the best method of establishing and conducting industrial schools for the benefit of the Aboriginal Indian tribes”.

The Davin Report (1897) was commissioned by Sir John A. McDonald to bring to Canada the lessons learned by the U.S. in operating their Indian Residential Schools.
The Canadian Residential School System was not a by product of Canadian governmental policies nor a happenstance; they were conceived, constructed and operated to break individuals, families, and communities of Indigenous Peoples. Give some thought to what state your family might be in if your children had been taken away and removed from your own culture, language and ways of life- and not one generation of children; but many. I’m asking you to really reflect on that this day - it’s something many of us live with every day of each year. by @earleinarson

This last month of summer we held our annual canoe trip up the arm. By way of working towards more land based Indigenous informed learning me and an Indigenous colleague took wilderness and remote first aid. The one with the sling was our instructor- he actually dislocated his shoulder irl during the training. by @earleinarson

May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People. Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People are three times more likely to go missing and six to seven times more likely to be murdered. Every red dress is a reminder of someone who should still be here with their family. 💔 #mmiwg2s by @earleinarson

Many scholars talk about trans disciplinary work but I decided to actually walk the talk yesterday and attended an Emerging Scholarship in Indigenous Early Childhood Education panel hosted by the University of British Columbia Vancouver @ubc_indigenous_ed . Dr. Melani Manitowabi, Aurea Vericat Rocha, and Lori Huston, presented and engaged in Q and A which was facilitated by Dr. Jan Hare. I heard a lot of resonance in their Indigenous informed research approaches to the post sec Indigenous scholarship world. Very well presented and I gained a lot listening.

Consider signing this petition to the House of Commons today. Archival records from Canada’s Residential Schools are in danger of being destroyed.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It is an important day that honours the Indigenous survivors of the Indian Residential School System in Canada who were forced to attend and where some died there and never made it back home to their parents. My Mother, GrandMother, Aunts and Uncles all went to one. I’m a Sixties Scoop Survivor, which means I was taken from my Indigenous family and raised as a ward of the state of Canada.
Today, let’s remember to lift Indigenous voices with lived experience. That’s really who we should all be listening to, re-posting and sharing today (and everyday). They are the important voices in this conversation.

A great Indigenous working group meeting hosted by @universityofbc and @bcit in the beautiful Musqueam Cultural Center. The agenda for the BC PSE (post secondary education) Indigenous meeting opened with a Welcome by a Musqueam Elder and was led by Kory Wilson who created an environment that welcomed everyone’s input and generated a fullsome conversation. I always appreciate the way Kory holds space for all the voices in the room. We ended up unearthing many concepts and beginnings of dialogue that we will build on in the future. by @earleinarson

Indigenization work includes Place-based work. As the Indigenization specialist for our College I co-hosted a place-based tour of Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm that is operated by @takayatours today. The water was calm, 22 degrees, and the rain held off. We had great uptake this year and filled three Canoes. Our Tsleil-Waututh host had us see the lands and water as the unceded, traditional territories of the Tsleil-Waututh as they were and are today. The Tsleil-Waututh are the true stewards of these lands and seas, and it is vital for all of us to recognize and honour their stewardship that reaches back for time immemorial. I thank our hosts for sharing their history and stories with us. Many of our staff let me know that they gained a lot of knowledge today. Truly worth while. #Indigenization #indigenous by @earleinarson

My comments on B.C. Premier David Eby @davidebybc along with Minister Anne Kang @annekangburnaby on their announcement that the @nec_vancouver will be British Columbia’s next public post secondary.

(The NEC is currently not a public post secondary and is a PTIB ((Private Training Institution Branch)) institution and has not been funded as public post secondaries in B. C. are.

@websummitvancouver this week. Met some great Indigenous people working or interested in the space, and saw some old friends. Lifting up the good work of the @firstnationstechcouncil! They offer Indigenous Peoples training and a gateway into the tech space. I used to work there and I’m proud to call them friends - they’re good people.

I crashed the BC Government’s session at the end of their announcement on the Integrated Marketplace at the BC pavilion and raised the issue of the need for the continued and further enablement of Indigenous Peoples’ direct involvement in any opportunities the BC Government creates within the tech world. I spoke to both Minister @diana_gibson_bc of the Ministry of Jobs, economic development and innovation and to Peter Cowan, the CEO of @innovate_bc. I asked Peter if there would be specific pathways for Indigenous Peoples within the Integrated Marketplace- I believe there should be. They both took time out to listen.

Saw the “Indigenous wisdom meets emerging technology” panel with @hesquiaht , @james.a.delorme , Ethan Clark hosted by @donnasoundctv (who did an excellent job probing the intersection of Indigenous values and the tech space!). They explored how Indigenous knowledges and worldviews are so important in the creation and placement within upcoming technologies like blockchain and AI as Indigenous Knowledges will help build more equitable and fullsome technological ecosystems. (and next time Indigenous Peoples with important voices are throwing a press conference media people - maybe show up a little!) by @earleinarson

It is all the individual’s dedication and commitment to the work of bringing much needed Indigenous knowledges and worldviews to the Academy that stays with me as the NIUSLA Summit 2025 wraps up. The great work being done by the members and supporters of the National Indigenous University Senior Leadership Association at @firstnationsuniversity First Nations University of Canada is uplifting and is helping to reaffirm my own work. Many times in this work of Indigenization I feel isolated and left to cut pathways by myself in the post-secondary system. I work hard and I’m thoughtful in my work; my doctoral studies are embedded directly in my day-to-day work. At the summit I met many others directly involved in this work and we shared thoughts, approaches, ideas. At the summit, at the meeting, and at dinner together. Indigenous Peoples know how to create community and pull together for the common good. I was honoured to be invited to this community and I raise my hands to the good work being done by all in this community. #indigenous #IndigenousLeadership #education #IndigenousLeaders #firstnations by @earleinarson
